Pause/Resume Media AND Slide
Apr 10, 2018
Hi folks.
Ok, my client wants custom button with no seekbar on the player, but does want a seekbar on video within slide
PROBLEM
When I pause the video, the slide continues to play, throwing off timings. So here is what I need:
A way to have the seekbar of the video pause everything and then resume. So far I have tried:
---trigger pause timeline when click video - works, but wont resume the slide and only resumes video when seekbar clicked
---click pause on seekbar - the slide continues to play
---took the seekbar out, added trigger pause timeline - no way to resume
---tried creating a layer that prompts a resume, but cant get it to pickup up where it left off on the main layer...
Here is a sample attached. See what you can do with it. Again, the objective is to have seekbar control of the video but to have video AND slide pause/resume on click.... if it is possible.
THANKS!!

I'm not sure if this would work for you but have a look at the the attached. I use a layer to pause the baselayer timeline.
that works well! Thank you so much!
Hi Michael - We ran across an oddity today trying to pause media and the timeline, so I stumbled upon your solution. However, when I preview and when I publish your file, the first time I click on the Pause button, the Pause layer appears and the timeline stops, but the video keeps playing. If I click the Pause button again, all stop as expected. Have you seen this? Perhaps something is off with the latest release?
Hi Diana,
Thanks so much for bringing that to our attention! I was able to reproduce the same behavior in a fresh file. I'm sorry that this is slowing you down!
Let me get this issue in front of our team to see how we can help. I'll keep this discussion updated with any new information.
Even though I have set a trigger to not advance to the next slide until the user clicks or swipes the next button, the storyline video continues to move very fast from slide to slide without being prompted.. what is causing this?
Hey Kimberly,
I see where Michael reached out to help you out here with a similar question.
It does sound like your slide properties may be set to advance automatically vs advance by user.
If you need us to take a look at anything, feel free to share your .story file.
Hi Alyssa, I was wondering if there has been any development concerning that issue? I stumbled about the same problem in one of my projects. Thanks!!
Hi there, Cornelia. I don't have any news yet, but we're making sure the customer impact is accurate for this issue. We'll post here with any changes!
Hey folks! I wanted to share an update with you. I've done some further testing, and I've found that the video on the base layer will continue to play only in Storyline Preview. The video pauses correctly when the file is published. Here's a sample file for you to test.
Is this consistent with what you're seeing? If you have an example of a video continuing to play even when the content is published, please share a link with me!
Great news, everyone! As promised, I wanted to circle back to let you know the issue you were seeing where a video on the base layer would continue playing, even when a slide layer was open, is now fixed!
Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for Storyline 360. Details here.
Please let us know if you have any questions, either here or by reaching out to our Support Engineers directly.
Having a similar problem and hoping someone can help. See attached for trigger setup: I'd like to give the user the option to pause a video at any time when they click the TELL ME box in the footer. They can then read some pertinent information re the video while it is paused. When they wish, the can click the CONTINUE box in the footer, at which point the video should resume where it left off. The problem: The video will not pause the FIRST time TELL ME is clicked, it continues to play behind the layer. But the video does pause and work correctly when TELL ME is clicked the SECOND, third, fourth time it's clicked. Any ideas? I'm truly stumped!
Hi Empathos! Try changing the order of your triggers on the Tell Me button to "pause media" first, and then "show layer."
Let me know if that works. If not, I'd love to tinker with your .story file if you can attach it here!

Hi Crystal, Let me try this again. I gave your suggestion a try and it didn't work. Here's the slide to take a look at. We sure appreciate your insight!
Thanks, Denise! I'll have a look at your file. Just a heads up that your contact info comes through when you reply via email. No worries, though; you can edit it out here if you'd like.
I'll update this discussion with what I find!
Hello again! I had a look at your project with the latest version of Storyline 360, and without making any changes, the video paused for me the first time I clicked Tell Me button. Can you double check what version of Storyline you have installed? Go to Help > About Storyline.
Here's the output in Articulate Review. Let me know what you see on your end - hopefully the issue will be solved with a simple update!
Hi Crystal, Storyline 360 v3.17.16117.0. Is this what you're using or is there an update?
Hi Empathos,
The latest build for Storyline 360 is Build 3.19.16600.0. Looks like you may be still using a previous update. You can click here for all the details as well as instructions to update.
Was the link that Crystal shared above working as intended for you?
The update worked like magic! Thank you for stating the obvious...sort of like, when in doubt, read the directions - or update the software.
That's what we like to hear! Glad that worked for you and thanks for letting us know :)
