Storyline 3: Finding and Replacing Text

Storyline 3 lets you find all instances of a word or phrase quickly, anywhere in your project. You can even replace specific text with another word or phrase with the click of a button.

Searching for Specific Text

  1. Press Ctrl+F on your keyboard, or go to the Home tab on the Storyline ribbon and click Find Text.
  2. When the Find window appears, enter the text you want to find in the Find what field, or use the arrow on the right edge of the field to select from search strings you used previously.
  3. To find text that has the exact combination of uppercase and lowercase characters you entered, mark the Match case box. Otherwise, Storyline will find all occurrences of the text, regardless of case.
  4. To find only complete words, mark the box to Find whole words only. For example, a search for "art" will find only occurrences of the word "art" and not other words that contain the same characters, such as "articulate" or "artistic." (This option won't be available if you entered more than one word in the Find what field.)
  5. Click Find Next.
  6. Storyline takes you to the first occurrence it finds. You can now close the window, or you can keep clicking Find Next until you see a message indicating that Storyline has finished searching the project.

Replacing Text

  1. Press Ctrl+F on your keyboard, or go to the Home tab on the Storyline ribbon and click Find Text.
  2. When the Find window appears, click Replace.
  3. In the Find what field, enter the text you want to replace.
  4. In the Replace with field, enter the new text you want to use instead.
  5. To find text that has the exact combination of uppercase and lowercase characters you entered, mark the Match case box. Otherwise, Storyline will find all occurrences of the text, regardless of case.
  6. To find only complete words, mark the box to Find whole words only. For example, a search for "art" will find only occurrences of the word "art" and not other words that contain the same characters, such as "articulate" or "artistic." (This option won't be available if you entered more than one word in the Find what field.)
  7. Click Find Next.
  8. Storyline takes you to the first occurrence it finds. Now you can do any of the following:
    • Click Find Next to leave the text as is, without replacing it.
    • Click Close if you're finished and you want to close the window.
    • Click Replace to replace only this occurrence of the word or phrase. Storyline will make the change and immediately take you to the next occurrence.
    • Click Replace All to automatically replace all occurrences in your project.

Storyline will let you know when it finds no more occurrences. If you clicked Replace All, the message will also indicate how many replacements were made.
