Motivating learners is a key goal for course designers. Even the most exciting subject matter can feel boring to learners if the content is irrelevant, has poorly written course descriptions, lacks benefit to the learner, and more. What’s more, if they’re not interacting with the content, learners are more likely to space out.
As course designers, it’s our job to come up with creative ways to keep learners tuned in and receptive to the material. And finding ways to gain our learners’ attention is what this week’s challenge is all about!

Really like the opening split screen effect and the first person perspective once the course starts.
Do you edit the split screen together with something like Adobe Premiere or Camtasia, or are they separate videos within Storyline to create that effect?
This may have been stretching the specs of the challenge a bit. I was thinking about boring white walls and how there are so many whites in the paint stores. Some whites really make other colors stand out and some whites do the opposite. Here it is:
Hi Caro, I like where you're going with this... the 'change walls' button didn't work for me though, you may want to have a look. The idea reminds me of a course I build once for a client where I added a the ability for them to 'customise' their office. With each click of the background, the whole background (walls and furniture) would change colour and objects.
Here is something I work on some time ago. It was used as a starter activity for a management training course. The aim of the activity was to demonstrate how frustrating it can be when you get interrupted by someone with random questions when your working to a tight deadline. Hence the random questions.
And here's a good article on how displaying the user's name can take advantage of 'The Cocktail Party Effect'. Just like when you overhear your name in a crowded room, seeing your name written will also gain your attention.
The whole intro section was scripted to catch the attention and push you forward in your journey. The voice over adds a lot here and I credit Mathew the v/o artist with a lot of the success of this course.
This is more like a reissue as I have moved it over to Storyline 360 and done a minor tidy up. Looking at it now I still love it. I think it is time for me to build a sequel.
One interesting fact about this course:
When I briefed the v/o artist, I listened to Mathews show reel and said "I like the voice over you did with the reverb, can you use plenty of reverb please" his reply was "there is no reverb you must be talking about my manly voice".
When I facilitate ILT (maybe I'll get to do it again some day) I like to kick off with a question that gets people thinking so they can learn something about themselves--everyone is interested in themselves so that's how I try to attract attention. For this demo I saw this silly research on how your sleep preferences can reveal things about your personality, so I just had fun with it. Have a good week everyone!

Great demonstration of the Cocktail Party Effect. I looked at this interaction before reading your post with the article, so it was kind of cool to have this example in my head. Something else I found interesting here was how effective the simple use of speech bubbles can be to create dialogue. Even if there is an interruption or distraction of some sort.

I've also utilised the Gutenberg Diagram to place the main text in the Primary Optical Area (top left), with the 'overheard' conversation between the Strong Fallow Area (top right) and Terminal Area (bottom right). These are usually the areas of a slide that we spend most time focussing on. Had I placed the 'overheard' conversation on the Weak Fallow Area (bottom left), this probably would work nearly as well.
And you're absolutely right, it is interesting how our eyes are almost trained to follow speech boxes.

Even the most exciting subject matter can feel boring to learners if the content is irrelevant, has poorly written course descriptions, lacks benefit to the learner, and more. What’s more, if they’re not interacting with the content, learners are more likely to space out.

Hi Caro, I like where you're going with this... the 'change walls' button didn't work for me though, you may want to have a look. The idea reminds me of a course I build once for a client where I added a the ability for them to 'customise' their office. With each click of the background, the whole background (walls and furniture) would change colour and objects.

Here is something I work on some time ago. It was used as a starter activity for a management training course. The aim of the activity was to demonstrate how frustrating it can be when you get interrupted by someone with random questions when your working to a tight deadline. Hence the random questions.

As we are all posting some oldies I have dragged this one out:
The whole intro section was scripted to catch the attention and push you forward in your journey. The voice over adds a lot here and I credit Mathew the v/o artist with a lot of the success of this course.
This is more like a reissue as I have moved it over to Storyline 360 and done a minor tidy up. Looking at it now I still love it. I think it is time for me to build a sequel.
One interesting fact about this course:
When I briefed the v/o artist, I listened to Mathews show reel and said \"I like the voice over you did with the reverb, can you use plenty of reverb please\" his reply was \"there is no reverb you must be talking about my manly voice\".

When I facilitate ILT (maybe I'll get to do it again some day) I like to kick off with a question that gets people thinking so they can learn something about themselves--everyone is interested in themselves so that's how I try to attract attention. I've tweaked Zsolt's JavaScript and added some conditional triggers.
If you ran this on an LMS, the learner would not be required to enter their name manually.

Great demonstration of the Cocktail Party Effect. I looked at this interaction before reading your post with the article, so it was kind of cool to have this example in my head. Something else I found interesting here was how effective the simple use of speech bubbles can be to create dialogue. Even if there is an interruption or distraction of some sort.

Thanks Sunet. Yeah, there's a bit more going on here than the Cocktail Party effect.
I've also utilised the Gutenberg Diagram to place the main text in the Primary Optical Area (top left), with the 'overheard' conversation between the Strong Fallow Area (top right) and Terminal Area (bottom right). These are usually the areas of a slide that we spend most time focussing on. Had I placed the 'overheard' conversation on the Weak Fallow Area (bottom left), this probably would work nearly as well.
And you're absolutely right, it is interesting how our eyes are almost trained to follow speech boxes.
