Great insights, thanks, DavidTait and Katie-Jordan. When I survey my career trajectory, the convergence of two events pushed me into the L&D profession (although I was wholly clueless).
- First, my church needed someone to teach the teen boys' bible class on Sunday mornings, and one of the church elders asked me ... until I said yes! 😂😂 I was in my early 30s.
- Around the same time (at work), I was handpicked by one of the company's vice presidents to join a new team she was forming, the quality assurance (QA) team. We were tasked with liaising with all the auto insurance vendors that displayed our rates in their systems. We tested the third-party raters to ensure our rates were displayed correctly and agents knew how to position our products. From there, I traveled with my VP doing "in-store" training at agents' offices as the company expanded into more states.
That was all 2+ decades ago. Since then, I have served as the co-director of the Bible school program and been a ministry leader at church, a Microsoft Certified Trainer, L&D manager, and public school staff trainer. Now, I'm an instructional designer at my current employer.
Who knew!?😂
