Instructional Design Podcasts #67: Challenge | Recap

In last week’s AMA, Tom Kuhlmann invited course designers to ask him anything about e-learning. Users asked questions on getting started in e-learning, building better courses, working with SMEs, production tips, and much more.

Given Tom’s expertise and visibility in the industry, it’s no surprise the event was hugely popular. But like any successful learning event, some of the biggest insights came from you—the Articulate community.

This week, it’s your turn to tell us more about how you work and get things done as e-learning and instructional designers.

Challenge Of The Week

This week your challenge is to record your answers to the following interview questions:

  1. What’s your job title? What title do you think really captures your roles and responsibilities?
  2. What software tools do you love?
  3. What's your workspace setup like?
  4. What is your creative or design philosophy?
  5. How do you stay fresh and keep building your skills?
  6. How do you avoid burnout?
  7. How do you save time and boost your efficiency day-to-day?
  8. How do you manage your workflow? Do you have a project management tool you love?
  9. What books or blogs have been influential to you?
  10. What kinds of tasks do you love to do? What gets you excited to sit down at your desk?
  11. What do you like to do least? How do you keep yourself motivated to do that stuff?

Formats: Save each audio clip as its own file. Use a naming convention that makes it easy to identify each audio file to the corresponding question. You can use numbers (1-11) or any format that works best for you.

Recommendation: SoundCloud was the tool of choice in our last challenge. You can set up a free account where you can post your clips. If you’d like us to host your clips, post a .zip file of your audio files and I’ll happily upload them for you.

Extra credit: After recording your audio clips, post a summary of your answers on your own blog or in the forums.

Extra extra credit: For the overachievers in the community, try video recording your answers like folks did in the webcam video challenge.

  • David: What are you looking for with question 3. What's your workspace setup like?

Right now my workspace setup is a mess for anyone looking at it but me :) I'm not sure what you're asking.

      Great question, Linda!

You dont have to share a picture of your workspace, just describe your work environment.

For example, I work with two monitors, a sit-stand desk and a sketchpad that I use to play with ideas. I also keep my audio gear on a rack beside my desk so I can record screencasts. I like keeping the audio gear off the desk so I have more room for note-taking and sketching. I keep two pairs of headphones on my desk: noise-cancelling headphones for when I write and ear buds when I do skype calls.

Whatever you want to share about your essentials as it relates to your workstation. I know some folks like to jump into a conference room or different room for brainstorming and use the computer work area for the actual production.

      Does that help?

It helps, but now I think that I'm very boring compared to what others do!

Well ideally I'd like to make it a claymation video, but wouldn't have it ready for a couple of years.

        I'll work on something speedier.

If you want to share your video here first, we'll promise to hold off tweeting it until you're ready. Think of the comments section as a challenge screening room. #SafePlace

Thank you! If I do it the way I am thinking then I should include bloopers too.

Does anyone know how I can get video files from an iPad to a PC?? I %^&*%$ Apple devices. I just don't get what's intuitive about them ;)

I thought I'd try something different, recording and editing from a mobile device. That was easy enough but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get these things to my PC.... If only my android device hadn't broken down :(

Did you plug your USB from your device into your computer? You should only have to do that, press the Trust pop up on your device, then go to Computer in Start settings, then click the device and open the folder with all the media.

I did that but to no avail. It just wasn't showing the iPad in my windows explorer. I now have installed the dreaded iTunes software and now it actually does show the iPad in my devices... Sweet Mary!! But at least I can get to those files!
    • One way would be to install Dropbox on your iPad and share/upload your videos that way.

Is it me or are the comments doing weird things like repeating the post, adding extra blank spaces when you edit them?
  • I have a wmv file I'd like to share. Can Articulate host this? Sorry it's so late!
