Interactive Charts and Graphs #64: Challenge | Recap

I recently began reading The Wall Street Journal Guide to Information Graphics. It’s been on my reading list for over a year, but I never took the time to go through it. Until this week.

That’s because a blog reader emailed me looking for examples of charts and graphs in e-learning courses. I’ve collected some examples from the news sites, but nothing really focused around online training courses.

Knowing how important information graphics are in the community, I thought this would make a great e-learning challenge!

Interactive Bar Charts

Articulate community member Michael Hinze shared a creative solution for animating bar charts using Storyline 1. Using button sets and custom states, the bar graph updates based on the options selected by the user.

Interactive Graphs with Sliders

One of my favorite examples is this interactive graph from community member Joanna Kurpiewska. Shared in a recent e-learning sliders challenge, this example makes use of Storyline 2's sliders to adjust the market price and quantities of goods.

Interactive Charts

Here's another example from Articulate Super Hero Phil Mayor. Learners are asked to add numeric data to compare their data with the chart's built-in data.

Challenge of the week

This week your challenge is to show how interactive charts and graphs can be used in online training.

You can share a static example of charts and graphs or you can create something more interactive to show and compare data.

Resources

It always helps to build templates and demos when you have real content. Here are a few resources that can help. If you have another source for data, please share it in the comments.

Share your e-learning work

  • Comments: Use the comments section below to share a link to your published example and blog post.
  • Forums: Start  your own thread and share a link to your published example..
  • Personal blog:  If you have a blog, please consider writing about your challenges. We’ll link back to your posts so the great work you’re sharing gets even more exposure.
  • Twitter: If you share your demos on Twitter, try using #ELHChallenge so your tweeps can track your e-learning coolness.
  • Facebook: Share your work on our Facebook page by replying to this Facebook post with a link to your example.

Kudos to those here who are pushing the limits of Storyline to display interactive charts and graphics - what might be called "data stories". While we are still at the early stages, I can see over time and with future versions of Storyline how we will have much more ability to use Storyline as a data visualization tool. At least I hope so as this is a passion of mine. I now use Tableau's storypoint features and SAP BusinessObjects Dashboards to tell data stories. I have attached a "Rent versus Buy" example - it is not really a contribution to this challenge (it is a flash file inserted in a one slide Storyline file). However, I look forward to when Storyline might be able to do this from scratch.

I am getting a page not found error for your blog.

The graph is really good and I could see using this with some text to explain what was happening that year... I did find that I couldn't work my way back to the start so you might want to look at that.

Great catch Tristan, thank you for the input. I added some legends which were missing and fixed the navigation issue with one missing State Change. Sorry about the blog, I had the post go-live scheduled for 5 am EST so, no one could have access it before then.
  • Oops... Now, I always seem not to see these new challenges, I miss the 'recent posts' list on the right of the page! I guess I have to bookmark 'e-Learning challenge complete list' page. Also not found how to subscribe for new posts by mail...

Right on, Ashley! You'll have a couple weeks to catch up since next week is "winter break" and the following is annual recap. Two weeks off from e-learning challenge school:)
