Using Interactive Maps in E-Learning #237: Challenge | Recap
E-learning designers use maps to show locations of objects, to guide learners from one point to another, share information about multiple places, or to help learners conceptualize themes with visual context.
When learners have access to map-inspired interactions, their natural inclination is to dig into the details and explore the map to learn more. Maps are also a great way to add context and a sense of location to e-learning courses. And maps are what this week’s challenge is all about!

This week, your challenge is to build and share an interactive map to show how they can be used in e-learning courses.

Vikings are known through history by its capability of negotiation and commerce. Under this premise we created a learning resource in which user travels around different islands in order to acquire the necessary knowledge that will allow him to become a salesman. To simulate this journey we included an animated map that works as menu and takes register of the advance you've had during the course.
Probably either animated .gifs or video animation. I've tried similar effects but Storyline doesn't support bend and bounce animations yet. Keyword: yet?
This is a map I used for our Folktales course. You pick a country and then once you have completed the folktale you are returned to the map to pick another country etc... To keep it simple I just included one slide per folktale.
Finally, it's done! I've created a concept of an interactive map - menu, where you can fly freely and choose the topic. Use the arrows to move the spaceship.
This is one screen example to show the idea of navigation. You can move the space ship but there is no option to start the topic or test :)
Interesting! I've been at looking using the arrow keys in this manner. I assume each arrow key triggers a corresponding motion path with a relative start point? And how do you stop the spaceship flying off screen? Is it a hotspot or object intersection trigger around the edges of the screen that stops further movement?
Each arrow key triggers a motion path with a relative start point. The length of the path is based on the grid. I've divided the whole screen into squares so it's easy to check the position of the spaceship.
To prevent it from flying off the screen, there is a condition on the movement action checking the value of x and y coordinates. Each arrow key click is increasing or decreasing x and y variable.

I've used maps to provide some context for eLearning, even when it's not specific to a real place. I built a quick sample to show how this might work, using numbered markers to show the steps that lead to a health insurance claim. There's also a button you can use to see more of a street view.
I can see how useful that could be, especially for new-hires in a fast-paced office, for example. The ambulance movement brings it all together nicely!
I've worked in a lot of claims arenas, and using a realistic situation helps to make boring content more relatable. Subrogation, for example, is not a thrilling topic on the face of it, but relating it to the car accident you had back in 2012 and how your insurance company paid you, but then probably got paid back by the insurance company for the person who rear-ended you, makes it real.
I had some free time today, so I added a little more polish to my entry (at the same link). I've also added a blog post. I'm still working with my web guru to include download links for source files, so once that's up and running I hope to add it to the post.
Good improvements and I like the Another Point of View. You are finding that getting the changes done over time can be the better way. It does take work to do a blog and coordinate all of this. Good example.
I've create an Office Tour to help people learn where the departments are. I included some animations for the lift so learners can pick what floor they want to look at. There is also an option to select a character at the beginning.
Lot's more I'd love to have done with it, but unfortunately, project deadlines beckon!!!

Vikings are known through history by its capability of negotiation and commerce. Under this premise we created a learning resource in which user travels around different islands in order to acquire the necessary knowledge that will allow him to become a salesman. To simulate this journey we included an animated map that works as menu and takes register of the advance you've had during the course.

This is a map I used for our Folktales course. You pick a country and then once you have completed the folktale you are returned to the map to pick another country etc... To keep it simple I just included one slide per folktale.

Finally, it's done! I've created a concept of an interactive map - menu, where you can fly freely and choose the topic. Use the arrows to move the spaceship.
This is one screen example to show the idea of navigation. You can move the space ship but there is no option to start the topic or test :)

Interesting! I've been at looking using the arrow keys in this manner. I assume each arrow key triggers a corresponding motion path with a relative start point? And how do you stop the spaceship flying off screen? Is it a hotspot or object intersection trigger around the edges of the screen that stops further movement?

Each arrow key triggers a motion path with a relative start point. The length of the path is based on the grid. I've divided the whole screen into squares so it's easy to check the position of the spaceship.
To prevent it from flying off the screen, there is a condition on the movement action checking the value of x and y coordinates. Each arrow key click is increasing or decreasing x and y variable.

I've used maps to provide some context for eLearning, even when it's not specific to a real place. I built a quick sample to show how this might work, using numbered markers to show the steps that lead to a health insurance claim. There's also a button you can use to see more of a street view.

I've worked in a lot of claims arenas, and using a realistic situation helps to make boring content more relatable. Subrogation, for example, is not a thrilling topic on the face of it, but relating it to the car accident you had back in 2012 and how your insurance company paid you, but then probably got paid back by the insurance company for the person who rear-ended you, makes it real.

I've create an Office Tour to help people learn where the departments are. I included some animations for the lift so learners can pick what floor they want to look at. There is also an option to select a character at the beginning.
Lot's more I'd love to have done with it, but unfortunately, project deadlines beckon!!!
