I watched Toy Story last weekend for the first time in almost 20 years. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed that movie.
When I first saw the movie, I enjoyed it for the 3D design and animation effects. However, this time around, I enjoyed the movie less for its special effects and more for its use of anthropomorphized objects. In other words, the humanized toys!
Watching the movie, all I could think about was liberating my kid's dolls, figurines, and stuffed animals from her toy chest so I could create e-learning scenarios.
And that's what this week's challenge is all about. First, let's look at some examples of how toys can be used in storytelling.

These videos have been around for years but they’re still some of the best and funniest examples of using toys for storytelling. Using business-style action figures, you'll learn all about the SOA life.
Toys saying things to other toys! You don’t need to invest hours creating stop motion animation. Go lo-fi and create a series of still photos and overlay callouts and chat clouds. I really love this use for toys in e-learning.
This week your challenge is to design a short interaction using toys as your primary characters. You can combine toys with photographs, illustrations, or hand-crafted scenes and backgrounds.
The objective this week is to replace your usual e-learning graphics and characters with toys.

You can use Articulate Storyline, Articulate Studio ‘13, or PowerPoint to create your challenge entry.

This is pretty sweet Trina. I love the concept. I would love to grab the intro text, copy it over to PowerPoint throw the 3D effect for perspective to make it look just like the original film. I love this feature in Adobe Premiere for rolling credits on film. I look forward to see you at LSCON.
I think you make a good point Barry and I agree with Alexander. But, what if we did want to use toys in a for-profit course? What if I used my submission (which I haven't finished yet) in my portfolio and a client wanted me to do something similar for them. What then? Hmmm...
This is going to matter on the jurisdiction, laws and how they are interpreted vary around the world. There might be issues with using Disney/Pixar/Marvel/DC characters. I would think that there would be less of an issue using something like toy soldiers, hot wheels cars, or Lego. These are more generic. If you show a pair of gloves in a course you wouldn't need permission of the manufacturer. There are actually quite a few safety videos out there using Lego (you probably shouldn't use the same characters from the Lego Movie though). There shouldn't be a problem in using toys/characters in a challenge like this. The educational use clause usually is exclusive to public schools. I also don't think that it would be an issue using characters in a portfolio would be an issue, you're not using the characters to sell a product outright.
I’ don’t really know as the fine points of copyright are outside my area of expertise. I do know that many organizations are very protective of their copyright. I’d opine that even a not-for-profit might run into issues if they crossed paths with say the Disney Company legal department. Using images of protected products as part of a personal portfolio might also be problematic in that , if you are using the portfolio to sell yourself, you are looking to make a profit, yes?
My only point is that images, toys, photos and such are subject to copyright and we need to be sensitive to both the spirit and letter of the law. All you have to do is get permission. I’ve found that most places are willing to let me use materials if I give them credit.
Well, there's probably a loophole or some kind of protection for this because we can open another "can of worms" if we think deeper than this. For example; if you shot your own background images, would you then have to ensure that no brands were recognizable on the shot? i.e. cars, buses, etc. It's definitely an interesting topic for a separate thread.
Just got back from a week holidays in Valencia, Spain to visit family and Las Fallas, will put together something over the weekend, thinking of using a couple of Game of Thrones figurines to build a puzzle game.
Great challenge this week! I've been wanting to do something on workforce generations, so I pulled out some toys and a digital camera and published this: http://chilp.it/e5a82da. I'm not sure if this week's submission will get me in trouble with anyone who doesn't approve of the toy for their generation. Just in case, sorry about the dinosaurs, monsters, etc.
Thanks Oscar, I used the same colours and shapes as Toy Story, but the fonts are different. I used another, child-like font for the first word.

Watching the movie, all I could think about was liberating my kid's dolls, figurines, and stuffed animals from her toy chest so I could create e-learning scenarios.

And that's what this week's challenge is all about. First, let's look at some examples of how toys can be used in storytelling.

Toys saying things to other toys! You don’t need to invest hours creating stop motion animation. Go lo-fi and create a series of still photos and overlay callouts and chat clouds. I really love this use for toys in e-learning.
This week your challenge is to design a short interaction using toys as your primary characters. You can combine toys with photographs, illustrations, or hand-crafted scenes and backgrounds.

This is pretty sweet Trina. I love the concept. I would love to grab the intro text, copy it over to PowerPoint throw the 3D effect for perspective to make it look just like the original film. I love this feature in Adobe Premiere for rolling credits on film. I look forward to see you at LSCON.

This is going to matter on the jurisdiction, laws and how they are interpreted vary around the world. There might be issues with using Disney/Pixar/Marvel/DC characters. I would think that there would be less of an issue using something like toy soldiers, hot wheels cars, or Lego. These are more generic. If you show a pair of gloves in a course you wouldn't need permission of the manufacturer. There are actually quite a few safety videos out there using Lego (you probably shouldn't use the same characters from the Lego Movie though). There shouldn't be a problem in using toys/characters in a challenge like this. The educational use clause usually is exclusive to public schools. I also don't think that it would be an issue using characters in a portfolio would be an issue, you're not using the characters to sell a product outright.

I’ don’t really know as the fine points of copyright are outside my area of expertise. I do know that many organizations are very protective of their copyright. I’d opine that even a not-for-profit might run into issues if they crossed paths with say the Disney Company legal department. Using images of protected products as part of a personal portfolio might also be problematic in that , if you are using the portfolio to sell yourself, you are looking to make a profit, yes?
My only point is that images, toys, photos and such are subject to copyright and we need to be sensitive to both the spirit and letter of the law. All you have to do is get permission. I’ve found that most places are willing to let me use materials if I give them credit.

Well, there's probably a loophole or some kind of protection for this because we can open another \"can of worms\" if we think deeper than this. For example; if you shot your own background images, would you then have to ensure that no brands were recognizable on the shot? i.e. cars, buses, etc. It's definitely an interesting topic for a separate thread.

Thanks Oscar, I used the same colours and shapes as Toy Story, but the fonts are different. I used another, child-like font for the first word.
