Using Web Objects in E-Learning #220: Challenge | Recap

Storyline’s Web Objects are similar to lightbox slides in that they give course designers a solution for loading on-demand content and resources when they need it. What makes web objects unique is how they allow learners to access external content such as web pages and intranet sites directly inside the course.

Ideas for using web objects include:

  • Pulling in compliance documents from intranet sites
  • Loading synchronous discussion forums and chat rooms for performance support
  • Playing educational podcasts and explainer videos

Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to share an example that demonstrates how web objects can be used in e-learning.

If you’re not using Storyline or Studio, feel free to show something comparable in whatever tool you’re using.

Resources

Here are a few resources to help you get started. If you get stuck or need some help, please post in the forums and we’ll be glad to help you out.

I've clicked through som many of these and again another good concept, it really does have that in shop feeling with the music. I like the artwork and the layout too. The only thing I would add is close buttons, shut down the web object windows.

Super cute Krista! I wish I had thought of it. The music put me in a shopping mood and I loved the art and composition. Do you mind if I make a suggestion? Since the music is such a key part of the whole vibe, maybe consider keeping the shopping screen inside your player so the music keeps going while you are shopping. I can't see exactly how you set up your triggers but it looks like you are jumping to a url--maybe try keeping the shopping experience inside the player with the web object tool. I would spend a lot more in the handbag department with that music going! I tried a quick one here.

Thanks for your helpful suggestion! I made a few changes and figured out how to display the web object with triggers. Looks so much better now!

Great music and creative concept Krista, I would add a hover state to the title "Next" button so it remains visible on hover but, I really liked the fading effects on it.

David, you're so serious! Compliance documents? Educational podcasts? Best web object in the world is a daily horoscope! This demo comes courtesy of astrology.com and my archive of cute cat vector art. I've been playing with this concept for a couple weeks and I just needed a challenge to give it a debut. The hardest thing for me wasn't the web object--it was creating the conditions in the variable to get the dates of the astrological signs right. May the stars be aligned for you all!

I love your demo Jodi, but it didn't work for me. I'm a Capricorn, but it showed me the Aquarius horoscope.

Are you on the 19th or 20th? The zodiac calendar I used showed Capricorn on the 19th and the 20th as the start of Aquarius. This happens to me all the time for my birthday--4/20. Some times I'm Aries, sometimes Taurus. If that's not the issue, let me know your date and i'll go see if I messed up my conditions--which is possible. :)

      I like your demo, Jodi.
The color scheme is relevant to horoscope subject and audio effects are a nice touch.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow: my energy level is going to increase and stay high for another few weeks!

This is brilliant Jodi, I'm not even into astrology but the friendly cats had me gripped. Very nice artwork and the concept great overall.
  • WebObjects are "awesome". I built two samples for this week. One provides a way to organize and display many of my previous Articulate submissions into a single player. The other provides a tool for new e-Learning designers to gain access to common resources we all use along the way. Enjoy!

This is a cool idea to show your demos Richard. BTW one of your "Background" menu titles is missing a "d".

Thanks! I updated it. That 8pt font is getting harder to read as I get older. :)

It’s beginning to look like old times with your latest contributions, Richard. The screenshots look really sweet. Looking forward to viewing the demos when I get home.
