Testing of Text based blocks in Rise with NVDA
Hi everyone,
I have a question about how NVDA behaves when you test your Rise courses - when I try to go through it using the Tab - Space bar, it picks up only interactive elements (tab, button, attachment), and the actual Paragraph blocks are not picked up. However, when I start using the up and down arrows, it picks up the text, but only in small chunks of characters, so not the entire sentence. If I use NVDA key (it could be Caps or the Windows button, depending on local set up of NVDA) + a it starts reading the entire text in the paragraph, which sometimes is quite a lot, and the NVDA narrator won't stop until it literally goes through it all. Am I missing something or is this 'normal' behavior of NVDA for text blocks in Rise?
Maybe there is another thread somewhere about this topic - so if it is, please point me to it.
Thanks,
Madalina

This is normal behaviour. You just need to get familiar with how to control the screen reader. You will very rarely use the tab key. There are a handful of keys I use for JAWS. I usually trigger it to read all ( insert + down arrow) and then hit escape when I want it to stop in a location. I use other shortcuts to jump to specific elements such as headings, links etc.
Here's some documentation on how to control it: https://dequeuniversity.com/screenreaders/nvda-keyboard-shortcuts

Thanks SamHill for the quick reply - I was familiar with Deque resources...but the hit escape part I missed. I will check it again.
I'm glad that SamHill was able to pop in to help you out.
I wanted to mention that the number of characters read when using browse (reading) mode is a setting within NVDA. This setting can be adjusted if you'd prefer your screen reader to read a bit more.
