All Objects On Screencast Showing up At Once While Editing

Aug 24, 2021

Hello All, I am fairly new to Storyline 360 and creating my first full length eLearning. I am creating a lecture, and inserted a ~20min screencast onto one slide.

I am using shapes, captions, text boxes, etc. at various points in the screencast to call attention to items in the recording. I have made it so that these objects typically appear for 2-10 seconds in the screencast. When I play/preview the screencast the objects appear and disappear appropriately according to these time limits.

However, when I am editing the screencast and adding the objects, they are all appearing at once on my screen, which is making it very difficult to continue to edit the screencast as I can't see the area of the screen that I am trying to highlight. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Please see attachment for visual explanation.

In the timeline pane, to the left of the objects, there is an eye icon. Clicking on it will make that object invisible. When you are through editing, clicking the eye icon at the top will first turn them all invisible, and a second click will turn them visible again.

FWIW, for me, best practice would be to split that screencast into 10 or 12 sections, and put one on each slide. Start the video when the timeline starts, and unless you need to pause for learner interaction, jump to the next slide when the video ends. It avoids this problem, gives you so much more flexibility, and keeps the timeline a manageable length. All of these lead to shortened development time (you can cut it in a few minutes with MS photo, or the free version of Lightworks), and the learner never knows or cares how many slides they see; all they see is the content.
