Hi, does anyone know how to (if possible) extract the Articulate Storyline file from a zip folder? I cannot find my original Articulate file, and wanted to know if I could get this from the zip file, instead of recreating it.
Unfortunately, you cannot extract Storyline file from ZIP folder because ZIP folder is the output of your course -- if you will extract that folder, the files you will see are HTML5 or SWF.
Most of the times it happens that storyline.files exist under Articulate projects folder. Kindly check that folder. Here is the location
--> Go to My documents -- My Articulate projects
OR
Open AS2 again and under recent items you will find the same course/project and Save as to the location you want.
I'm glad Mohammad was able to assist you here, and as he mentioned the original .story file is not located in the published output - so prior to publishing you'll want to ensure you do a save as prior to closing out Storyline.
Yes, only the published output is saved in the My Articulate Projects folder. The .story file is not saved automatically as a part of publishing or within Storyline's general behavior.
However, there may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:
1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer:
%appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
I suggest if you can write a post or a blog on this issue because, I guess, many of us are facing the same problem and don't have any solution. The solution you have given is unique -- Many of us didn't know about it.
Instead of searching within the folder one by one, I think this could save lots of time.
Is there a reason why a file wouldn't be in the temp folder? I know it is probably time dependent, but a file I am looking for is not there (last updated in July) while another file is there (updated early 2017).
The temp folder is where files are saved if Storyline crashes as a part of the auto recovery feature and are regularly removed as you edit and work on a file and then save a new copy.
Had you saved the other older file somewhere else?
I'd like to use the presentation as a template for another presentation I want to create. So I'm looking to edit it.

All you need to do is duplicate the course, then begin building the new course from the duplicate version.
Just hover over the course tile on your Rise 360 dashboard, click the ellipsis that appears, then choose Duplicate. Enter a name for the new course and click Save. (Only course owners and admin collaborators can duplicate a course.)
I'm curious if there has been a change or more information since written on how we utilise an old package (zip file), either in Storyline or Rise, respectively. Having had a freelancer previously build a large course in Rise now we're unable to return and edit this ourselves. We will have the same circumstance for others in Storyline. Might I have overlooked some functionality? Or is this not possible
Thanks for reaching out to follow up. I'd be happy to help you.
The processes shared above for both Rise 360 and Storyline 360 have not changed. Perhaps you can reach out to the freelancer and have them send you a copy of your Rise course. You will need to request the .story file for any Storyline projects.
When working with a freelancer in the future, I'd recommend having them share the source files with you if you may be making adjustments and updates.

Hi Ange! Looks like Mohammad is assisting you here and he is correct. You cannot retrieve a project file from the published output.

Thak you all for your reply. Only the Output file is inder My Articulate Projects folder and it is too far gone to be under Recent in AS2.
I always save my AS files - I am not sure what happen this time round!
Thanks again.

Thanks Leslie and Ashley for appreciating that.

Thanks Ashley for shedding light on this. Learnt something new!
Glad that helped you all out!

I'm trying to download a template from Rise: it comes in as a zipped file and I'm not seeing a .story file.

Am I missing something with this?
Hi Becker Logisitics!
Rise 360 has three exporting options:
Can you tell me more about what you're trying to do? What type of export option are you looking for?
I'd like to use the presentation as a template for another presentation I want to create. So I'm looking to edit it.
