Followed Directions to Open Recovered TMP File - Storyline Opens and Closes

Dec 12, 2023

A course I was working froze to the point of having to close SL through task manager. I save every 5 minutes. But for someone reason the version it now opens is missing 5 days of work. I saw a .tmp file of the most recent version. I followed these directions:

  1. Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
  2. Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
  3. Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
  4. Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

When I renamed the file it is not renaming the file type. Im ending up with *.story.tmp  I ensured the file is recognizing SL as the only software. SL is viewing it as a .tmp file which it will not open. Please help.

You ever had a project that made you question whether you wanted to continue doing this. :(

Depending on the version of Windows you are using, you may not actually be changing the file extension from *.tmp to *.story directly from the desktop.

Use File Manager instead, and make sure that your view settings allow you to see the full filename and extension. Right-click the filename as if you were going to change the name, but change the *.tmp extension instead. That should work for you.
