how to make an object on base layer trigger to open another layer

Hello, I have a blank box on my slide that when clicked, makes a green check mark appear in the box.  How do I put a trigger on the green check mark to trigger it to open another layer on the same slide? I have tried everything I can think of and nothing is working.
