If I go back one slide, then return to the original slide - the txt associated with my marker is no longer available to view. I have the marker set to change to 'selected' when user clicks marker.
I'm not sure I can fully visualize your setup and what you're looking to do. When you click the marker, the label opens. Do you want that label to stay open when the user returns to the slide?
You also mentioned you have "the marker set to change to 'selected' when user clicks marker". When using Built-in states (such as selected), there's no need to create a trigger to change the object into that state. The logic is all done by Storyline for you.
You could also use the visited state, as it should stay in that state when the user returns to the slide (as long as you set the slide properties to "Resume saved state").
