Incomplete/Failed trigger not working in Storyline 3

Feb 02, 2022

I have a colleague who has Storyline 3 only who wants to use Completion triggers in her course. (Storyline 3 does not allow adding/editing Completion triggers, but they can be added in Storyline 360 and then will function in Storyline 3.) Thus, I opened her Storyline 3 course with Storyline 360 and added a Completed/Passed trigger to the Pass layer and an Incomplete/Failed trigger to the Fail layer of a slide results page. I then opened the course in Storyline 3 and published (to AICC, using Incomplete/Failed reporting status). When I tested the course in our LMS (SuccessFactors), it recorded the completion correctly but not the failure. I tried publishing from Articulate 360 and it recorded the failure correctly. To ensure it wasn't an issue with the individual course, I created a  single slide course in Storyline 3 with 2 buttons, and in Storyline 360 added a Complete/Passed trigger action to one button and the Incomplete/Failed trigger action to the other button. I then published in both Storyline 3 and 360. Again, the failure recorded in our LMS when published to Storyline 360 but not Storyline 3. According to the support article about it, the Incomplete/Failed trigger should work in Articulate 3 when added in Articulate 360, but it does seem to be working. Is this a bug? I have attached my test course. Thank you!

Hi Wendy,

I appreciate you sharing what you are experiencing with your published Storyline 3 course, and thank you for sharing the .story project file.

I published the course to LMS using AICC and with your tracking method of Completed/Failed and uploaded to SCORM Cloud, and got expected results.

I also published the course to LMS using AICC and the tracking method of Completed/Incompleted and got the expected results.

It seems like the issue is limited to your LMS. Have you looked at other LMS Reporting options to see how they work in your LMS?

Hi Leslie. Thank you for taking the time to help with this. However, when I try the course you published to AICC and uploaded it to the SCORM cloud via the link above, I get the same results that I had with my LMS -  it recorded the completion correctly (upon clicking Pass button) but not the failure (upon clicking the Fail button). Specifically, when I click the Fail button, it says "Incomplete" (same as if I did nothing), not "Failed".

Hi, Wendy.

I also experienced what you described above after testing your course in SCORM Cloud. Publishing it from Storyline 360 produces a different report than when the same content is published from Storyline 3. I logged it as a possible software bug to our team and linked this discussion to the report.

As a workaround, if your LMS allows, could you publish it to a different format, such as SCORM 2004?

I'll come back to update you when I have any news to share!
