Layer trigger not working in scene or entire project preview

Jun 07, 2019

Hi!

I created a project that has a simulation in Storyline 360 in 'test mode'. I am trying to re-purpose this simulation to be a simulation without scoring.

For the design tab:

  • I update each slide to give feedback by choice & require an answer.
  • Score is set to None and Submit on Click

I removed the results slide and added a layer called "feedback" for each slide.

The hotspot on the page is set to move to the next slide.

I put a transparent shape over the whole slide and set a trigger to show the feedback layer.

The hotspot is on the top of my timeline, the feedback triggered shape is at the bottom of my timeline.

When I preview the slide on it's own, it works how I intended it to. The hotspot moves it forward and anywhere else shows the feedback layer.

However, when I preview the scene or the entire project it just moves forward regardless of where I click.

Has anyone else run into this and know what I might have set incorrectly?

Hi Kelly,

It sounds like the Submit trigger is advancing to the next slide or item in the course as designed, and if you set up a custom feedback layer Storyline likely doesn't know it's required to go there vs. to the next slide. Often when I see these examples, it's easier to modify one of the built-in feedback layers instead of creating your own as the former lets Storyline's quiz logic take over.

If that explanation doesn't help you get up and running again, can you share the .story file here so that folks in the community can take a look?  If so, you can upload at this link using the Add Attachment button or you always have an option to share privately with our Support Engineers. Either way, we'll delete it when done testing.

I am having a similar problem to that described above.  I created a drag and drop slide.  When the two correct slides are dropped onto the correct targets, the "Correct" layer should appear, otherwise, the "Incorrect" layer should appear. (For ease of debugging, the graphs are tinted red when incorrect and green when correct.)  When I preview the slide, everything works as intended.  However, when I preview the scene or project, the submit button automatically advances to the next slide, regardless of whether the answer is correct or incorrect. The "incorrect" and "correct" layers are skipped entirely.  I have attached a simplified two slide example to demonstrates the problem (and I have verified that the issue persists after the slides have been published).  I appreciate any assistance.

I did finally figure out a way to get this to advance properly.  In the example I posted, I had selected (under the "Question Tools" tab) Feedback: None.  When I change this to Feeback: by question, everything works as designed.  I suspect this may be a bug, but perhaps it is intentional for some bizarre reason I cannot conceive presently.  (Behaving differently in slide versus scene/project preview is not ideal.)

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you were experiencing as well as the resolution.

As Ashley shared above, part of the Submit button trigger is to move on to the next slide as well.

When you're previewing a single slide, the action of going to another slide is not happening, so the issue is not present.

It doesn't seem as if this problem was ever solved satisfactorily.

I have essentially the same problem.  Layers show up only in slide-preview mode but not in scene-preview or published published-scene modes.  I gather that it has something to do with the "Submit" trigger behaving inconsistently.  Here is the file.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your .story file so that we could take a look.

The difference in the slide preview vs. project preview in your file is that the Show Layer trigger is after the Submit trigger. Move up the show layer trigger on your question slides, and it will work as expected.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
