Next button function delayed despite no trigger to cause the delay
Feb 04, 2015
I converted two of my Storyline courses into Storyline 2 and now the user can only proceed to the next slide after the timeline ends when they click Next. I am not sure how this is happening and it did it to two separate courses.
The courses worked fine in Storyline 1 and the user was able to click Next at any time and be sent to the next slide. For some reason now the Next buttons only work when the slide completes. This is happening on EVERY SLIDE! I checked the player properties, the transition settings, the triggers. Nothing makes sense as to why this is happening.
I didn't add any new triggers to the Next button and it's still set to 'Jump to next slide when user clicks the next button'. There isn't a restriction to the timeline, yet that is what is happening on ALL of my slides! Please help!

Here's an update and resolution to this problem. My initial course had the menu set to 'restricted' navigation. Then when I imported my course, this caused issues for the Next button. However, when I switched off 'restricted' navigation in the Storyline 2 version of the course, the Next button works again, without waiting until the end of the slide to work.
It's a crappy solution because I wanted a restricted menu for this compliance course, but this bug forces me to unrestrict the menu.
Just wanted to link up your other thread/response here for anyone that may run across this thread.

Hello Adrienne - This thread is a bit dated. If you have your menu/navigation set to Restricted, the user cannot proceed until the timeline on the slide has ended. If you do not wish to change this setting, so that the user cannot skip around or just flip through the course too quickly, perhaps you can reduce the timeline on the slide so that this is not apparent to the user.
If you need us to take a look, you are welcome to share the .story file.

I understand Adrienne. If the navigation is still set to restricted, you will still experience this delay though. So, you will either need to change the navigation to free or adjust the timing on the slide.
I'm attaching an example.

Yeah, that's more of a navigation control at that point Adrienne - due to the Menu + Navigation buttons.
What do you mean you cannot have a menu? Did you want one? Are you setting the navigation to FREE, is that the concern?

So you are setting the navigation to FREE it sounds like and ditching the menu. Gotcha. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something I could perhaps better assist with.
Hi Adrienne - another forum user just commented on this thread and it made me think to share it with you as it may be the workaround you were looking for. Please note, we do not support the modification of the published output though.
Leslie, Yesterday I did not have this problem and now I do. Has there been an update to this? My last slide now has a lag time before the Next button becomes active. Does this mean that the menu still needs to be set to free? Not what the SMEs or I want. Please let me know.
Hi LaVon!
Since this thread is older, let's start fresh. First, what version of Storyline are you using?
Can you tell me more about what you're seeing? Is the next button disabled until the timeline ends only on the last slide of your course?
I just had this issue and found a simple fix. I'm using a current version of Storyline 360. I have a slide that has no audio and is a "filler" page to tell the learner they are about to take a quiz so I can have the next button option from the get go but was experiencing the delay only after switching my Menu to "restricted" Instead of changing the end of the timeline I found a simple fix by changing the Slide Trigger to "Change state of Next Button to Normal When the timeline starts on this slide" Worked like a charm!!!
Awesome, Jamie! I appreciate you chiming in to share your solution and an update on an older conversation. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊
I too set restricted o the course and now find a lag. I see a solution is to make the timeline shorted. Is this the only easy way and does this mean I have to apply it to every individual slide or can it be done en masse? thanks
Hello Diane,
Thanks for sharing what you are currently experiencing.
I can see that you are using Storyline 360. If you do not need the prev/next button to be restricted to the slide timeline, you can uncheck the box to include the buttons in the restriction:
