Next button not working with keyboard only navigation

Jun 27, 2023

It was identified by our accessibility test users that they keyboard only navigation shortcut for moving between scenes (next button) is not working.  This means our visually impaired users have to navigate using the side menu which is not as intuitive.  Is there currently a solution for this?

Open to your thoughts.

Thanks,

Hi Craig, and welcome to the E-Learning Heroes Community! Glad you're here! 🎉

Thanks so much for reaching out!

I have a few questions in order to better assist you:

  • I'd like to confirm the keyboard shortcut your users are inputting when testing your course. Are they currently using Ctrl+Alt+. (period) to navigate to the next slide? If they are using a different key combination, please let me know what they have tried.
  • Can you please check your Accessibility Controls in the bottom right corner of the player to see if your Keyboard shortcuts are toggled to on within your course?

Here's a closer look:

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Lucina,

Thanks for reaching out!  Our users are using that key combination (Ctrl+Alt+.) to navigate.  We have also confirmed that all other keyboard shortcuts from the link provided are working with the exception of Ctrl+Alt+. and Ctrl+Alt+,

The accessibility controls are indeed toggled to 'on'.

Open to any suggestions you may have.

Hi Craig,

I did a quick test on my end and I was able to observe no issues with the "Ctrl+Alt+." keyboard combination to move to the next slide. Here's a quick video of my test:

It looks like something on your end is preventing the shortcut from working properly. Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case so we can test the shortcut using your actual project file? We'll delete it when we're done testing!

Hi Craig!

Thanks for following up and sharing your file!

Testing the project on my end, I was also unable to progress through your course with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+.. However, this behavior is expected since the introduction slide was not linked to the subsequent scenes/slides from your story. The Jump to Next Slide won’t trigger when the next slide is in another scene unless the scenes are linked.

After doing so, I was able to navigate through your course with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+. successfully.

Also, for your reference, I've attached a revised version of your story file that I used in my example.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!
