PowerPoint Import - Design Ideas

Dec 09, 2021

Hello! I'm looking to import a slide deck to Storyline utilizing 'design ideas' within PowerPoint. However, when I important to Storyline, the design idea colors, fonts, and formatting is no longer there and a general theme in Storyline takes the place. Is it possible to import design ideas themes from PowerPoint to Storyline?

Thanks!

Happy to help here, Emily! 😊

Importing PowerPoint content into Storyline isn't an exact one-to-one conversion. As a result, text and shapes may look a bit different. Here are our pro-tips on importing PowerPoint and Presenter Content into Storyline 360.

If those tips don't help, feel free to send your PowerPoint file here so we can test things out and let you know what we find!

Hi Emily - PowerPoint's design themes should import for you in Storyline. The only thing I've noticed is that PowerPoint embeds some fonts that I don't have installed. This causes Storyline to replace with the default Open Sans fonts.

But the slide layouts, theme colors, and theme fonts are all recognized.

Any chance you can post a sample PowerPoint with design themes? I'm happy to test it out to see how it imports.

Thanks Becca. I have previously reviewed the link you provided and it doesn't address the design themes.

David, see attached file - I'm not too concerned with changing the font once it is imported to match our brand, I'm more focused on verifying that the design ideas formatting (aside from font) are transferred. Thanks!

Hi Emily. Thanks for sharing a sample file. I gave it a quick try, and everything seemed to import as expected. You can view the attached .story file to compare it with your example. If your PowerPoint isn’t importing as expected, open a ticket w/ our support team so they can take a look.

Here’s a quick video overview of the import process and how your PowerPoint looks after importing:

Hi David, thanks so much for your timely support. I appreciate you taking the time for the added help relative to the fonts in PowerPoint and how that carries over to Storyline - that's incredibly helpful and will save me significant time in the future.

When I went to import the PowerPoint slide deck myself,  I had similar results as to what you shared in the video. Is it possible for the orange floral of the 'design ideas' to transfer over from PPT to Storyline? It appears that it's that beige background takes the place in Storyline, when my goal is to maintain the orange floral.

Thank you!

Hi Emily - I didn't notice the background images failed to import the first time. After giving it a quick try, it appears the issue is the tiling format that's applied to the image pattern.

The quick solution is to select the background image on the slide master, cut the image (CTRL-X) to the clipboard, and paste the picture in place as a picture (CTRL-V). That will flatten the image formatting and allow it to import as expected.
The other option would be to save each background image as a .png file and import those images back into Storyline. I'll confirm w/ our support team the tiling issue, but that seems to be why the background images aren't importing.
