Prevent resetting the prestest but allow restarting the course

Jan 12, 2022

Our current courses have a pre-test and a final assessment.  If the learner passes the pre-test they can skip the content and complete the course.

Access to pretest is disabled by variables set when the learner selects the  button to navigate to the pre-test. In normal operation  they get one attempt and are pushed to the course upon pre-test failure.

However, learners are exiting and restarting the course if they miss two or more pre-test questions, and repeating the pre-test multiple times to pass.

I have reviewed the Resume Only setting option, however  this would eliminate the ability for a learner to reset the course if it locks up. Additionally, LMS admins do not have the ability to remotely reset a course.

With the bulk of our 6500 employees working from home, there are numerous factors that can cause a connection interupt, and lock up a course. Especially if the connection interupts on a question slide.   I have had exhaustive communication with the LMS' support team - no solution available from there. They just push it back on the course, as Articulate courses are considered custom.

So I am between a rock and a hard place.

Is there a way to combine a pre-test SCO published with Resume Only with a course SCO published with Prompt to Resume?

or Is there script that can inhibit resetting of the Pre-test attempted variable when restart is selected?

Thanks for reaching out, Kenneth!

You may be able to track more than one SCO (shareable content object) in a single course by publishing your quizzes separately, then embedding them in your course using web objects. Bear in mind that we don't officially support this method.

If this isn't what you had in mind, click here to connect with us in a support case to share more details!

Hi Becca,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm working with Ken on this as well. The Pretest unlimited attempts via a course user reset is an interesting and unintended loophole to working to skip the course.

We were wondering if you have a working example of an SCO SL360 course using web objects with quiz tracking. I've used them in the past but they are a bit challenging to get right. Eg; I've used a tutorial in the past to make a looping music background via web objects in SL360. That may be helpful for this concern. I'm also not sure if this feature will resolve our Pretest issue as resetting the course by the learner may also reset any "separate quiz" web objects as well. That is, if I am correct in understanding the provided approach.

In theory, we may need a higher level callout/variable that the learner cannot reset in the course to check against when we load the SL360 course. I've seen this in the past from other courses I've helped build in other authoring tools using the suspend data in the LMS and a true/false variable. However, it's a bit out of my realm of expertise. If this does sound like someone would know more about or know of a similar solution with an example, this would be greatly appreciated!
