Synchronization of shapes/captions with videos

Mar 21, 2023

Hi,

I have only been using Storyline 360 for a short time. I have already worked with other authoring tools, but I am now reaching my limits here and have a problem that I cannot solve even with the help of the tutorials.

I have recorded a screencast and inserted it on one slide. Then I added several shapes and labels/captions (explanatory texts) on the slide. I positioned them on the timeline at the places where they should pop up during the video plays.

I realized that the shapes, texts and video don't run synchronized once the video controls come into place. Therefore, I must now synchronise the shapes and captions with the timeline of the video so that they also appear at the right time when the video is fast-forwarded, rewound or paused. Currently I can only control the video with the controls, the shapes and texts just keep running on their timeline.

I am attaching a screenshot of the slide.

Thanks for your feedback and support on how to handle this.

Hi Veronika,

Welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community!

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue and I'm happy to help troubleshoot. One workaround you can try is to enable the Seekbar in Player Controls, then insert a transparent shape over the video. Here's a great video demonstration if you want to check it out!

  • Additionally, you can follow the steps below to enable the Seekbar:
    1. Select Player, then under Player Controls, check the box next to Seekbar. You can then choose if you'd like the learner to have the ability to drag it or not.
  • Next, you can follow these steps insert a transparent shape over the video:
    1. Select Insert, then shape to cover the video.
    2. Select the shape on your slide, right-click, and select Format Shape.
    3. Set the Fill to Solid fill, and drag Transparency to 100%.
    4. Set the Line Color to No line.

Now, when the learner views the course, they won't be able to click on the video to play or pause, but they have the option to play or pause the player seek bar, and the video and timeline should be in sync.

If you'd like assistance with your project, you can upload it here or share it privately with our team in a support case! We'll be happy to help and will delete your file from our systems once troubleshooting is complete.
