Tabbing Issue - Quiz feedback layer

Aug 02, 2017

My issue is with the quiz question feedback layer and the JAWS screen reader.

Issue: After the quiz feedback layer opens, the screen reader will first read the player elements (in red boxes below). It tabs to the feedback last. How can we prevent the screen reader from reading the player elements when the feedback layer is open? I know it is possible because it worked that way for me before. However, it is not working now. I can't remember doing anything differently.

I'll appreciate any tips from you all. Thanks.

Hi Tina,

It sounds really similar to an issue we have reported to our team, could you tell me what version of Storyline you're using?

In the issue we have our team looking at, the tab order isn't respected after the user activates the submit button and goes through the player again instead of directly to the feedback layer elements. This only happens with the built in feedback layers, so in the meantime you could look at using either of these to work around the issue:

  • Create your own feedback layers
  • Instruct users to use "Shift+Tab" to select continue as that's likely the last item on the slide.

Hi Ashley,

Sorry for the late reply. I've been really busy.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will try them. Meantime, what I have done was to customize the player features for the quiz slides -- I removed the three tabs on top of the screen and the seekbar. Unfortunately, i cannot remove the audio button because I can only remove it from the main player properties and I need that button for the rest of the course. Still, it was a bit of a nuisance, because the reader will still tab to the audio button, then to the submit button twice, before it will tab to the feedback. But at least, it will no longer scroll around the page unnecessarily. Hopefully, your suggestion will work.

Thanks.

Hi Kenneth!

The original issue mentioned here happens in Storyline 2. Specifically, the tab order isn't respected after the user activates the submit button and goes through the player again instead of directly to the feedback layer elements.

Does that match what's happening in your file? Are you also using Storyline 2?

Hi Geordie!

Since this is an older thread with various discussions, I want to ask you some follow-up questions to begin troubleshooting:

  • Does this issue occur with every .story file, or one particular file?
  • Is your issue that the tab order isn't respected after the user activates the submit button and goes through the player again instead of directly to the feedback layer elements, or are you experiencing a different issue?
  • Are you using a screen reader when this issue occurs, and if so, which specific screen reader are you using?

I look forward to your answers and to helping you work through this issue!
