Tab key navigation in Rise issues

We are creating an accessibility training, so it's important that we get the accessibility of the training itself correct.

Reviewer reported 2 things:

  1. When using the tab key to navigate, there was no visual indication that the "Continue" button is focused.  Is it possible to add this?
  2. When using VoiceOver (Mac), the "Continue" button is highlighted when tabbed to as expected but when you hit "Enter" and the next screen loads, the keyboard navigation jumps back to the top left including the "Skip to navigation", "Course Title", "Hide navigation", etc.  In order to focus on the actual page content, you have to tab through the entire left sidebar nav.

Is #2 going to happen if we keep the left nav?

Reviewer was reviewing in review 360

Thanks,

Sue

  • Hi SueBlanchard

Thanks for reaching out! I appreciate you sharing what your reviewer experienced when reviewing your Rise 360 course.

    1. If you use the tab key to navigate, you'll see the continue button outlined when focused. Let us know if they don't see this outline!

    2. Thanks for sharing that your reviewer is using VoiceOver. If the course title is selected when you press the Tab key, an option will appear that lets you skip the sidebar and jump directly into the lesson content. Press Enter to skip the sidebar or press Tab to continue navigating through the sidebar features.

If your reviewer is still having trouble, it would be helpful to know which keys and in what order they use them navigating with VoiceOver. It would also be helpful to take a closer look at a screen recording of their experience. We can continue the conversation in this thread or privately in a support case.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

      Hi Luciana,

Thanks for the reply.  I think I see the highlight around the continue button when it is focused but it is so thin, it is hard to see.  Is there a way to make it more pronounced?

        Hi SueBlanchard!

Glad to see Luciana has been helping you. Happy to jump in here!

The Tab-key navigation Luciana used in her example is a browser-based tool. I checked the settings within Google Chrome, and Safari, but did not see an option to increase the thickness of the line you are referring to. Enabling Full Keyboard Access on Mac hardware produced a slightly thicker line, but the difference was marginal. If exploring other screen reader tools is a possibility for you, I suggest looking into NVDA and JAWS. From my experience working with both, the focus lines are more pronounced, and much thicker for learners.

Also, if you're still having trouble, we'd be happy to take a closer look at your published Review output. Feel free to share the link here in the discussion or privately through a support case.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Regarding item 2, thank you for those resources.  I've run through a good portion of the training using VoiceOver and from my experience, I think we are good with that issue that he was experiencing.  When using voiceover, the focus on the continue button was much more pronounced.  However, with regular tabbing, it is very hard to see that it is focused. I can share the link to the review file via support ticket or other means if you think that would be helpful.
