Translation Export to Word/Import to Storyline

Feb 11, 2020

Help!  I am finding that my export files when imported into a Storyline file 'messes' with the formats, like paragraph spacing and bullets - and more.   I find that if I export the translation from a file and then import it back into the same file (I did that as a test), the formats go 'caplooey.'

Any suggestions for best practices? Are you considering this functionality on the improvements list.  We work with translation vendors that charge us considerable money to go back and desktop publish our content even when we take the steps to improve the formats.

Any feedback welcomed,

Hi Lynn,

Thanks for contacting us and sharing what you are experiencing with formatting after importing your translation file.

This is an issue that our team is aware of and investigating.

I've added this conversation to the report so that we can share any updates we have with you here.

The only workarounds we have listed are to edit after import or to not add formatting until post-import.

Hi Lynn!

I know this is a dated discussion, but I wanted to share an update if others come across this discussion with a similar request! We released Enhanced Word Translation in Storyline 360 (Build 3.49.24347.0), making exporting and importing Word documents so much easier!

There are many benefits to this feature, but one is preserved formatting! The legacy Word translation method removed some text formatting, such as lists and paragraph spacing. The new Word translation method preserves all text formatting, so you don’t have to spend time and effort correcting it.

Lastly, to take advantage of this feature, make sure you've updated Storyline 360 in your Articulate 360 desktop app!

I hope that Articulate will add this functionality to Storyline 3.

Right now, using the latest upgrade of Storyline 3, here's what my testing shows:

  • For text that hasn't been assigned a style: Storyline doesn't export list and spacing formatting. If I re-format the items in Word, it will keep the formatting when I import the document (which didn't happen in earlier versions).
  • For text that has been assigned a style: in my testing, Storyline has been inconsistent. For one attempt, it maintained the style on export, but didn't maintain it when imported. For another attempt, it didn't maintain the style on export.

I realize that Storyline 3 doesn't get (and, I admit, doesn't deserve) all the bells and whistles of 360. But this functionality seems more like fixing a bug than adding a feature. It should have been maintaining list and spacing formatting all along...
