Where 64-bit application?

Mar 19, 2019

Don't know why there is still only a 32-bit application available. What is this August 2001? Here we are 18 years later and with 64-bit multi-core processors. I don't even think that this application utilizes all cores on even a Ryzen 7 (have not tried it - that is my gaming computer).

Where is the 64-bit app -- in "development Hell"???

Hi Everyone!

Great news! I'm happy to share that we just released Storyline 360 (version 3.82.31354.0), which includes a new 64-bit version of Storyline 360! Harness the processing power in modern computers with 64-bit Storyline 360. Large, media-rich courses benefit from increased stability and faster performance!

To use 64-bit Storyline 360, please update your Articulate 360 desktop app, then click the Install button next to the Storyline 360 app with the 64-bit and beta labels. The Install button will change to an Open button when the installation is complete.

This was highly requested, so we hope it serves you in your course creation! If you run into any snags, don't hesitate to contact our team in a support case.

Hi Landon,

We haven't created a 64-bit version of Storyline yet, and I know it's been a popular request, so it's more likely in purgatory...with the possibility of redemption. I'll add this discussion to the request our team is tracking, and we'll be able to update you here with any changes.

If you do run into any performance issues with Storyline, please connect with our Support Team! They're there to help and can dig into the cause, offer solutions, and use the information gathered as evidence towards this feature.

Myself and the rest of the team are experiencing a progressive slow down of the program, it's as if we are always running out of resources.

I can tell you we are not, it's only SL 360 running very slowly. A major part of this is that systems everybody runs these days are 64 bit. Why on earth is this program still running at 32 bit?. It doesn't make any sense what so ever. The only thing we can think of is that your development team are incapable of converting this.

This needs to be running in 64 bit now and the team have just reminded me, when are we going to get a MAC version? not some 3rd party hack you offer to make it run, which is impossible on large corporate machines.

Time to upgrade and move forward to the present day guys. We support you with monthly payments it's about time you supported us as we keep you in work.

This is not a rant just fact.

I look forward to your reply

Adam

Hi Lauren

I am surprised by your first comment

"We'd love to hear more about your ideas and how a 64-bit application
would impact your workflow!"

Your technical department will be aware why a 64 bit application is better
than a 32 bit application. Most of your users will be on a 64 bit computer
running the Windows 64 bit operating system. In a nut shell the 32 bit
system can only address 4GB of RAM, a 64 bit system is massively more. A 64
bit app will be able to address more RAM, which would be very useful when
dealing with large files and videos. It would be much quicker and
the program would most likely not suffer the many issues your users report
e.g. crashes and running out of memory. 32 bit is old technology now, we
would like you to move with the times and go to 64 bit app.

Thanks

Adam

I work on a 64-bit Mac running Parallels. I have crashing issues and extreme slow down while running this software. Every computer that is currently being produced runs 64-bit. We NEED Storyline to update. I have been told personally that you will never make a Mac version of this software. I get that. However, PLEASE make Storyline 360 64-bit so that I don't spend so much time waiting while it processes and publishes.

I am very disappointed that we still have no progress with the 64 bit system.

Every month fixes come out and they usually lead to other problems!, that's why there are so many fixes.

This running out of memory and resources particularly with question banks needs to be sorted as a priority. I work for a very large company with 70,000 employees who now need more elearning training due to covid-19. I am now being asked by my bosses can we move to another elearning program if this is causing our developers problems!.

Storyline, this issue is not minor, it is getting worse and needs converting to 64 bit.

Dear all, I got the impression the 64-bit version is not going to be in the pipeline at all since it is most likely NOT categorized as a critical feature. Reading from the staff responses (and lack of responses) so far, it seems the need-analysis was not done, or probably just done in the business/financial perspective. Bottom line 64-bit is not going to add more revenue to the company. So the resources are distributed to the other features such as Rise, other new modules, etc which will attract more subscribers.

Hi Jay

If they think that 64 bit will not add revenue, they will be sadly mistaken. You're right in that it may not add more customers, but what about keeping the ones they already have?. Again I have been instructed to look at other alternatives, as this is causing all our developers issues. 32 bit means only 4GB of ram is utilized and Storyline also does not reliably use the virtual ram correctly, otherwise we wouldn't be having these sudden crashes and error messages on multiple machines and projects. Every month now they are fixing issues, which create other issues. Just look at the version history to see this.

My boss will understandably not keep accepting downtime/delays due to issues with their lack of 64 bit support, which will solve many of these problems They still don't directly support the Mac with SL360, which is also issue for us. But for now we use Boot Camp to overcome this. But this is not allowed on our direct network computers, which affects an awful lot of training developers.

I tried Captivate but this is not user friendly so we will have to look at others. If and when I do this I will report back to this forum.

Please modernize Storyline and add support for the following:

  • 64-bit version
  • multi-core processor and multi-threading support
  • usage of more than 4 gb RAM

There have been community posts and feature requests for over 8 years for this.  We have gotten new features over that time, but the software still works slow, crashes, and has all kinds of resource issues.  This needs to be made a priority.

Mac005 Asdu

Hi Trey

I'm afraid not. We are all in my team having regular out of memory issues and random crashes due to most likely the limitations of the 32 bit system.

I have raised tickets on this subject and have had numerous emails on trying to fix our problems, but they are all work arounds and have not fixed the problems.

They seem unwilling to fix the core problem, which is very disappointing for such a popular product.

Artifex eLearning

Hi I wonder if there's been any word about Articulate prioritising the development of a 64 bit version yet?

Without an update to 64, It looks like it will make storyline 3 totally useless for anyone who has bought a new Apple Mac with the M1 chip, forcing customers to switch to alternative authoring tools that are 64, such as Adobe Captivate.

If anyone could point me in the right direction to relevant threads then that would be much appreciated, as the lack of discussion around this does seem quite bizarre!

Thanks, Leo

Nejc Žorga Dulmin

Artifex, you aren't exatly right about that, Macs have been 64 bit for a while now, long before the M1 was introduced.

There's other "architecture translation" things going on here, but yes, until Parallels and VMware fusion don't deliver the versions that run Windows on M1 Macs, one can easily claim, that Storyline does not run on Apple's latest machines.

Artifex eLearning

Hi Nejc, thanks for the input but I think you misinterpreted what I was saying, as I never said Macs are 32 bit. They switched from 32 to 64 about 15 years ago.

The m1 technical preview programme for parallels often crashes 32 bit programmes. The presumption that Parallels or VMware will run 32 bit storyline 3 without any issues (including unacceptable loading times in 2021), doesn't fill me with too much confidence.

If you're part of the technical preview programme for M1 parallels then keen to discuss further via message, we can then relay any relevant information on this thread.

Thanks, Leo
