Moving PDF content into Rise

Dec 30, 2023

Hi everyone

Seeking your thoughts on best approach for the below.

We currently have a course (subject) consisting of weekly topics. Each weekly topic is delivered in PDF format, which includes a table of contents and numbered /titled headings, ie 1, 1.1, 1.2,   2, 3, etc. The content is text heavy, but well structured.

We now want to convert each topic PDF to its own rise module. The SME’s have been requested to review each topic (word version) and insert instructions throughout for the instructional designer(s).

Given some of the SME’s are new to Rise, I’m thinking the first step within the word doc is to highlight/rename the higher level headings (1, 2) as ‘Section 1, 2’ etc and the lower level headings (1.1, 1.2) within as ‘Lesson 1, 2’ etc. So clearly define the sections and accompanying lessons to match Rise’s structure/flow.

Then for the actual text content, it can be categorised/decided as to which block type would suit best.

Essentially the original topic word doc would become the design document for the ID.

Any thoughts on this process? Is there a better way?

Many thanks

Hi Lex! Great question! Converting PDF content into e-learning is definitely a process. But it sounds like you're considering what everyone is familiar with by using the Word doc as a storyboard for SMEs to review/make changes/confirm before building the course in Rise 360. And one more thing to point out (and in case you didn't know), we have some cool AI features coming soon that could lend itself well to this process and possibly save you some time. Just a little something to look forward to. 🙂 You can check out these upcoming features here:

Hi Sarah

Many thanks for the reply.

Is there a way you can add a summary (text) beneath a rise section heading? Basically a short introduction which sits below the section heading and above the first lesson?

Example below:

Section heading 1

Section summary/overview

Lesson 1

Lesson 2

Each main section heading in my PDF contains a short paragraph before diving into the sub parts.

If not, is there a workaround?

Thank you

Alex

I love your header summary idea, Lex! Unfortunately, that isn't an option currently, but you can submit that as a feature request here. One workaround I can think of would be to add an Overview lesson that just contains the summary text before diving into the other lessons, so something like:

Section heading 1

Overview [as a lesson]

Lesson 1

Lesson 2

If that doesn't work, hopefully the community might have other ideas they can share. 🤞
