Which LMS do you use and why?

Nov 03, 2011

Hey all,

Just a quick question to you....what LMS do you use and why?

I use Moodle 2.1.2 currently.  Why?  It seemed like a good idea at the time!  Now I'm frustrated with the SCORM reporting and interface.

Any thoughts?

We are using Saba Enterprise 5.x Enterprise which is a fully featured SCORM-compliant LMS that provides the infrastructure for enterprise training and management needs. It is the best LMS which easily allows you to build courses, import SCORM content, deploy online learning, manage users, communicate with users, track training results.

Thanks!

We use Plateau v6.2.  By looking at the replies so far, I don't see anyone else who uses Plateau.  Does anyone have any comments about this LMS?  Has anyone encountered any problems with Articulate interfacing well with this tool?  So far, it seems to work OK, but we still have problems with the Attachment and Exit links working well once it has been published to Plateau.

We went with Docebo. Price was an issue with us, but not the only factor. We knocked a couple off the list because they used languages that out IT department does not support. The things we like about Docebo:

- Cost

- More corporate look than others

- SCORM

- Easy to modify for our needs

- Works well with Articulate

- Easy for Training to modify/manipulate with little IT support

- Strong reporting features

- Prints certificates

- Clean and uncluttered look

- Easy navigation for infrequent users

- Good support network

We looked at over 50 LMSs and Docebo and Moodle were our final two. We chose Docebo because of ease of use, clean look, and ability to modify it with less help from IT.

We have been using an LMS from a very small company named SyberWorks Inc. for the past eight years.  It has its own authoring platform that is Microsoft Word based, but is also SCORM compliant.  Our vendor has been very cooperative in building interfaces with SCORM courses that allow us to view such statistics as the percent of students who got each assessment question right/wrong, etc. - which was very important to us.

Oracle with the OLM module installed for us.

We started with Moodle, but as our company moved across to Oracle HR, keeping all records in one place made sense, hence the swap to OLM.

We do need to adjust a couple of .xsd files from the Articulate published SCORM content, but then it plays and tracks smoothly.

Hello Richard,

All the information has been great!  It's nice to see that so many people have taken the time to reply.

Have I made any conclusions????  So far the honest answer is no.

I have yet to explore many of these....and it may be a case of "it's better to know the devil you are sleeping with"...or something along that line.

I have taken a brief look at Totara....and the equal to it from my supplier called 'Elis' (I think).  They are both a bit pricey....

I just wish Articulate Online had the ability to have 'courses' that were made up of several modules....

Cheers,

Dave

Hello,

Aren't I glad I logged in the community today!! I might just communicate with Paul Westlake further, who might be my saving grace. We use OLM and what a nightmare!! Articulate works perfect out of the LMS and as soon as we import into the OLM then the nightmare begins. Assessments would in fact not even import because it complains about missing the imsmanifest file.

We have had both Articulate guys and Oracle come onsite to see what the issues are but have not found any solutions to this day. This has been going on for 3 years since I joined the company.

This was implemented long before I came and they are not getting rid of it because apparently a lot of money was invested in it. So far investing in Quizmaker specifically has not been the greatest ROI, however the rest of the studio is very much in use.

I would really appreciate it if you could guide me as to where in the XSD do you make the adjustments and which XSD specifically. And if anyone has any light as to why OLM is complaining about not finding the imsmanifest file.

Thank you for the discussion; I have really learnt a lot - and wish we had the option of another LMS.

Ciao,

Makhotso,

Could you take me through how you are importing your content - I will then see how I can help.

I am sure we can sort something out... You are exporting from Articulate using SCORM 1.2 yes?

Yes, I publish to LMS and make sure the output option is SCORM 1.2. I also make sure to click the Reporting and Tracking button just to make sure that all eLearning options are correct with the LMS Report status set to Passed/Failed.

Then in OLM I select SCORM 1.2 Content Aggregation under specifications as that is the only option for SCORM. I leave the Tracking Type option to Automatic. After all the settings, then I select the zipped file to upload, and that is when it complains about the imsmanifest file.

I would appreciate all your help, thank you.

Change the tracking type to CMI...

I have changed to CMI and now get a different error - Can not build schema 'http://www.imsproject.org/xsd/imscp_rootv1p1p2' located at 'imscp_rootv1p1p2.xsd'

I really appreciate the assistance - thank you so very much.

Cool - Now we are getting somewhere! - I need to send you the .xsd files that you need to replace.

Replace the ones in your Articulate output file with these and upload replace on OLM - Let me know how you get on.

Thank you so much. Give me about half an hour to do and I will get back to you again. You are an absolute star.

Paul, you ARE A DEFINITE GENIUS!!! I am normally the girl who sits quietly at the back of the office and only noticed in meetings but today I am so loud with excited...thank you so so very much. I have managed to import perfectly, the only problem now is launching/playing the course. We can enrol in the class perfectly but cannot play the course, and this is the only missing thing now.

I am so so excited...dancing all over the place.

Do you see the player button in OLM? - Is it greyed out, or do you get an error message when you try to launch the content?

Happy to pop over to SA if you need help!!! (Not sure my boss would agree though!)

Apologies I got so distracted and abruptly ended the conversation, I had to to go explain the excitement to the team and my manager. I can tell you now that you are a hero in my office right now. We are celebrating this genius that we all havent even officially met. Please do tell your boss that if you were to ever find yourself in SA you will definately be an ultimate celebrity in the eLearning industry and I will make sure to pass the word on...everyone on this community is a witness to that...lol.

All praises aside...yes I am seeing the player button greyed out with no errors though. I just cannot click it to play.

Now that sounds like a issues with Catalog / Content admin... I will screencast / Screenshot my upload and publish process for you next week (teaching today!) and hopefully that will help.

Glad to share experience...

Paul

You're an absolute angel. Thank you so much Paul. Have a fabulous rest of the week.

My company chose Element K for the 'off the shelf' content that they sell with their LMS.  It's OK but uploading and getting an actual course out there is a pain in the neck.  I'm actually looking for ways to post a course to my sharepoint site and be able to track completions without using SCORM or the LMS.  I don't want to have to track via email but I might be stuck with that option if I want to forgoe our L-M-Mess.

Any ideas on how to make that work?
