I've seen folks achieve this by creating duplicate layers, and then applying the exit animation on the duplicate layer.
Check out this quick sample file I put together for you to see it in action!
So the issue really is having multiple animations on the same objects on the same layer? That is why the timeline is taking over?
Your example is exactly what I am trying to do.
