Are Rise flashcards accessible?

The Roadmap for Rise currently states that Keyboard and screen reader users can now explore flashcard interactions but then it lists the feature as planned. Is that currently working or is it planned for the future?

Accessible Flashcards - Keyboard-only users and screen reader users can now explore flashcard interactions. - Planned

  • Hi Pat! Correct, this is in the planned stages. Sorry for any confusion around the phrasing.

Hello Renz, I'm happy to see that you are working on improving accessibility for Rise.

I wonder if there is a resource where I can see which blocks or interactions are accessible for screen readers and keyboard only users, or if I have to test them all by myself. It would be really helpful with a list so I don't add blocks and then have to change them again because they're not accessible.

      Hi Renz,

I posted a follow up question to this thread. Could anyone from Articulate provide further detail? Thanks!

Hi Vanessa, while we don't have a list of learning blocks that are fully accessible, you can use the Roadmap as a guide on which learning blocks to avoid as they are not accessible yet. Also, it depends on how you use and configure the learning blocks. For example, if you use an image block but don't add alternate text to it, it won't be accessible to some learners.

  • After their status in the roadmap switches from 'Planned' to 'In development', is there a typical timeline or rough time estimate to when we might expect to have functionality available? I see Accessible Flashcards says it's In development along with some other accessibility related features.

Hi Cathy! Sorry we don't have a rough time estimate but we'll make sure to update this thread once Flashcards become completely accessible!

  • Hi! Let me add my voice to the request for a clear list of interactions that are not fully accessible in Rise. I have gone through the report you published and unfortunately I found it as difficult to understand as the WCAG guidelines are! So, please, when (I hope very soon) new features will become fully accessible, remind us clearly what is still pending. Full accessibility is compulsory! Thanks

  • Hi, just checking in on this topic. I would like to use flashcards in a course I am creating right now. I get mixed messages as to whether or not these are 508 compliant. We have to have all of our courses 508 compliant moving forward, so I am hesitant to use this feature unless it is fully compliant.

Is this feature 508 compliant yet?

    Thank you!

Hi Christina, thanks for checking in on this. We're working on improvements for flashcard blocks so, stay tuned for updates!

We keep our Rise 360 Accessibility Conformance Report updated for each improvement that we release so please feel free to check out this article anytime!

  • Flashcards are not accessible. Please don't create or offer any blocks without ensuring accessibility -- it just perpetuates poor design and makes parts of the tool unusable according to law. Have the new templates been verified as accessible?

  • Sorry for this question again but it is difficult to weed through the threads.

Can you confirm if the following are accessible with screen readers AND keyboard navigation:

    1) Flashcard

    2) Sorting

    3)Process

    Thanks,

    Maria

  • Our course met WCAG AA recently. There were many issues with Rise set up - menu, flip cards, knowledge check, colour contrast, drag and drop, sorting, process interaction all have issues.

Then of course the alt text issues on complex diagrams too.

I got around by using SL360 block which defeats the purpose of having Rise 360 really.
