I have had the same issues when trying to resize slides and doing other updates. There should be a recovery copy the next time you open the project. Maybe not. My only recommendation, and this goes with new creations as well as updates, save, save, save. Always save to your hard drive and do it frequently so you don't lose a lot of the project.
