Hello Helen,
In order to make sure that the audios are not overlapped with one another, I suggest enabling "Hide other slide layers" option. You can find this option by clicking on the settings icon that can be found at the bottom right just below the base layer by selecting the desired layer/all layers.
In this way viewer can choose any button and listen to the audio related to that button. Also if you have an audio present in the base layer, enable "Pause timeline on the base layer" option. With this option, if viewer clicks on a button while an audio is playing in the base layer, it pauses the base layer audio and lets the viewer to listen to audio that plays in regards to that button. Upon closing that particular layer, the base layer audio continues from that point where the viewer left.
