Cannot save - object reference error

Good afternoon, Storyline experts!

This one is a new one for me and I'm hoping someone else has come across it. I'm saving a file that I've been working on for about a week or so. It's only about 20 slides at this point. I'm unable to save the file. It gives me an error message reading: The project file could not be saved. Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I'm not sure what causes this error, so I'm not sure how to fix it.

It didn't give me a "low resources error." However, I have 4 GB of RAM on this machine and plenty of hard drive space.

I thought maybe the file was corrupted, so I tried to rename it and save it in another location, and it still won't save it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

  • Hey there Scott, sorry to hear about this issue that you're having. Its possible your file is indeed corrupt. One solution for a corrupt file could be to import your Storyline file into a new project: Importing From Another Storyline Project. Let me know if this helps, and how it works for you...

Thanks, Nicole! I'll try that next time. I thought about that, but I don't think I was following the correct process, so I appreciate the tutorial link. I ended up just closing the file and reopening it. No further issues. Fortunately, I didn't have to rebuild much.

    Thanks,

    Scott

Don't know if you are still on here, Scott, but you saved me a lot of angst!  I also ended up just closing the file and reopening it. No further issues. Fortunately, I didn't have to rebuild much either!!!!.

This just happened to one of my projects. Storyline is by far the buggiest, most undependable software I have ever used. It's not worth the price.

      Hi Robert!

I'm sorry to hear about the frustration this setback has caused you! I'd be happy to assist!

To clarify, have you already tried the troubleshooting steps shared earlier in this thread? If you're still unable to save your .story file, I'd be happy to take a closer look and test it for file corruption. Feel free to upload a copy here in the discussion or privately through a support case.

We'll delete it from our system as soon as troubleshooting is finished!
