Variable Reference Not Displaying?

I'm building an interaction (images below) that allows users to adjust number variables using 2 buttons. One button will add 1 to the variable while the other button will subtract 1 from the variable. There is also a trigger to reset the number back to 0 when the maximum number (in this case, 4) is reached.

The interaction itself seems to be working fine - the problem is that I need the variable to start at 0 and for some reason, my variable references will not display when it's at 0. When I change the variable default to 1, everything works perfectly and the variable displays on the screen during preview. But when I change it back to 0, the variable reference disappears and will not update when the buttons are clicked.

I'm extremely confused because I've used this exact interaction in previous projects, including having the variables displaying as 0 by default without any issue. The only difference was a higher maximum number.

What am I missing here?! Please help!

  • That is what's politely called "unexpected behavior." In other words, there's no good reason why the reference shouldn't display when the value = 0.

It's possible that something on the slide got corrupted.

First, be sure the file is on your local drive. (Opening and editing a file over a network can corrupt it.)

Then, I suggest you delete the text boxes with the variable references, and insert new ones. Maybe that will help.

If not, try quitting and then relaunching Storyline. Maybe even reinstall it.

If none of that works, I suggest you submit a case directly to the Articulate staff:  https://access.articulate.com/support/contact

This response makes me feel a lot better about not being able to logic my way to a solution. I've tried all your suggestions, short of reinstalling. Looks like I'm off to contact support!

      Thank you, Judy!
