Based on what I see in the images you provided, I'd say that the color scheme has the text and tabs for the unselected tabs set as the same color as the background. You'll need to go into advanced color editing, and adjust the colors.
Color editing in Classic provides a lot of control -- but that makes it a pain. I've attached a copy of Articulate's info about the colors.
