Customizing atl text for lightbox close button in SL360
Good morning e-learning enthusiasts,
I am creating an e-learning course which relies in part on lightboxes. The boxes themselves function beautifully with screen readers and the content is easily ordered with tabs, however, the button that closes the lightbox is not in the tab order menu for editing. I checked in the player options to no avail. Please direct me if I am overlooking a simple setting or if you have discovered a good workaround.
Hi Ashley,
It's not a part of the player nor is it directly on a slide. There isn't an option to edit the style or design of the close button for lightboxes.
Is the close button not being recognized by your screen reader or accessibility tool?

Hi Ashley, It is being read as a clickable button, but its action is not defined.
Hi Ashley,
The button isn't an item you can edit, but should be accessible as you noted in terms of clickable. What screen reader are you using to test it out?

Sorry to jump in your thread Ashley, but I have a related issue. (We use SL3.) When our Assistive Technology Specialist tried to tab to the exit button of the lightbox, it doesn't tell him that it's an exit button. It just dings in JAWS 18. He says the screen reader tells him it's a button you interact it but it doesn't say what the button is for. So he keeps going around the content, stuck in the lightbox. Is there any way to add alt text to that lightbox exit button?
Hi Rio,
No apologies necessary - there isn't a way to edit or access that button to add "alt text" to it, so it's a possible bug. Can you let me know what browser you were viewing the content in? Also had you uploaded to your LMS, web server, or were you testing it locally?

Hi Ashley,
It was being viewed in IE using Jaws by our Assistive Tech Specialist in our Blackboard LMS, and using NVDA as well. I tested it in Google Chrome using ChromeVox and it just keeps saying that the exit button for the lightbox as "button".
The workaround I have set for now is one-linber message letting the user know they can click that button to close the lightbox, or press the ESC key on their keyboard. It would be very helpful to have the option of putting an alternative text to it, or just have it preset to be read by screen readers as "Exit button" instead of just button.
Thanks Rio for sharing that info - I'll get this into the hands of my team and we'll investigate from there!
Sometimes my team catches errors in my logic and we don’t have a bug after all. Of course, if that’s the case, I’ll let you know!
Depending on priority and risk, some bugs can be fixed quickly, while others take longer to resolve. Here's more information on how we identify and tackle bugs.
I’ll let you know as soon as we have an update on this issue and I hope the workaround is sufficient till then.
Hey everybody. I'm excited to let you know that we just released update 13 for Storyline 360! It includes new features and fixes - check them all out here.
One of the fixes addresses an issue where the button to close the lightbox wasn't accessible for Alt Text.
Here’s how you can update Storyline 360 to take advantage of everything the latest release has to offer. Let me know how you make out!- RioSloanCommunity Member
Would there be an SL3 fix for this any time soon?
Hi Rio,
The next update for Storyline 3 (scheduled for release in a few weeks) should also have this fix. We'll let you know as soon as that update is ready.

That's great to hear. Looking forward to getting that update. Thanks!

Hi,
Was this fix implemented for SL3? I am having this problem in SL3 with update 5: 3.5.16548.0. This is the latest version approved by my agency so this is the only version I can use.
Thanks!
Gina
Hello, Gina!
I made a quick sample file with a lightbox using Storyline 3 update 5. When I tested it using the JAWS screenreader, JAWS announced, "Close Button. To active press Spacebar" when tabbing to the lightbox close button.
Here's a Peek of my testing. Does this not match what you're seeing?
