Designing an e-learning course that is compatible with a screen reader
Hi,
I am developing an e-learning course and have different interactive elements in it such as MCQs, hotspots, flashcards. I am running into the following issues when I'm trying to make the course accessible.
- I have inputted text into a shape using the edit text within a shape feature. When I group the icon with the shape and assign an alternate text, the screen reader only either reads "grouping" or "blank". I have removed the individual elements from the focus order and only included the grouped items to be visible to accessibility tools.
- How do I add alt text to different states and layers? For instance, I have a flashcard feature. In this, there are three states, normal, hover and visited. When the learner clicks on a heading, they can read the backside of the flashcard or a pop up. How do I assign alt text to these?
- Any tips on how to develop the course so that it can be configured using a screen reader.

Hi Shibu52 it sounds like you are at the very start of learning about accessibility. There are quite a lot of resources on the Articulate website, and will be a few videos on YouTube addressing some of your questions.
The following resource should be a good place to start and branches of as you are ready to go deeper: https://community.articulate.com/blog/articles/accessible-e-learning--screen-readers-what-you-need-to-know/1150176
