Embedding Rise output/link into Canvas LMS
Hello, I am new to Rise and Canvas and before progressing with the course build I need to know if these programs are compatible. Apparently Canvas is not SCORM or AICC compliant. I would prefer to have quiz results recorded in the LMS. Is this achievable? Thanks

Elaine, sadly the news from Canvas is not good -

It doesn't sound like there is a solution. Check out this thread: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/krXVCyoN0MhkPWoGtROrmV?domain=community.canvaslms.com where a couple of heavyweights in Canvas mobile, including the person in charge of developing the mobile apps, discuss things.Although the subject mentions Storyline and not Rise, there is mention of Rise in there and the issues don't seem limited to just Storyline.
Hey Elaine,

Yikes! I forgot to remove it. Thanks for letting me know!
No worries on our part Elaine, we just like to make sure the users are aware :)

I know I'm late to the party, but our school uses Canvas and I thought I'd chip in with some tips for implementing Rise content in Canvas. We're using Rise to replace all our lesson content in Canvas, which is about 14,000 lessons. At this time we've converted around 2,700 lessons. My advice:
- We're moving away from SCORM because we've found that it can break during the Course Copy process.
- Additionally, we'd rather assess students directly in the LMS (especially with Quizzes.Next now available).
- Finally, I've been told SCORM hasn't been updated very recently - another reason to move away as technology improves and leaves it behind.
- We export our Rise courses as web links, upload them to our server, and embed them within Canvas either as an outside link or in the rich text editor through an iframe. If the link is stable on the server, then updating the Rise course on the server should automatically push the update to every Canvas course that has the Rise content in it.
I'd be glad to answer any more questions!

Thanks, Tim. I did try the iframe and it worked just fine. I wasn't pleased with the look of the dual navigation of Canvas and Rise. Not sure that will change but I would like the option to remove the Rise menu, as you can do in Storyline.
Until then, we will either link to a new window or use the iframe.
Question: you said you "export our Rise courses as web links, upload them to our server, and embed them within Canvas either as an outside link or in the rich text editor through an iframe." Why do you take the extra step and put them on your server instead of leaving them on the Articulate server? Were you encountering problems?
You have quite an undertaking with all those courses! Good luck!

We use Amazon Web Services (AWS) to host our content. Placing the Rise content there offers a couple advantages:
- It allows us to have a permanent, stable link that is accessible by more than just the creator of the original Rise course (we have a team of editors/technologists that need access to all content)
- It gives us two copies of the Rise course:
- A live version on AWS that projects out to all courses/students
- A development version in Rise that can be updated throughout the year, then uploaded to the AWS whenever we deem it ready for students
We also host most of our other content (videos, syllabi, worksheets, etc.) on the AWS, so it was simply consistent for us to put Rise there, too. We had no problems with the Rise server.

Hi,
I use to work for Canvas and my husband still does. They are supposed to have fixed the SCORM files breaking in the course copies before last InstructureCon (July). If they didn't I'm sure it's coming soon. :)

Hi,
I see that posted your helpful tips on how to launch a RISE course in Canvas.
I just joined a company that uses Canvas for our learning products. It is not the ideal platform, in my opinion, however, it is what we have until we switch next year.
I am not quite following how you are putting "an outside link or in the rich text editor through an iframe." as you mentioned in your tip. Can you elaborate? Thank you so much.Hi Saeyoung,
Tim might not be subscribed to our community forum anymore since it's been a few years since his last post.
I checked the post you are referencing, and I believe what he means by this is that you will have to host your course in a web server, reference the URL pointing to this course in the web server and use an iframe code to embed it inside Canvas.
You'll need to reach out to Canvas support to confirm how this can be accomplished. Others in the community may be able to chime in as well.

There are so many replies here that I couldn't read them all.
If you didn't find your answer - The quiz will record in the Canvas Gradebook if you import it as a graded item. Then no matter what points you assigned in Rise, Canvas is going to reassign points, so go into the assignment and edit the points possible.

By the way, one more thought. When an LMS is not "SCORM Compliant" it doesn't mean the SCORM file won't work in the LMS. It means that all of the LMS is not compliant with al SCORM regulations and you probably won't be able to pull per-question-quiz analytics. Other than that, it will load and you can set it to report to the Gradebook.
Last I heard they are exploring the ability to be "more" SCORM" compliant as far as per-question-quiz analytics. The great thing is they have been building out a new LMS called Bridge which is designed for corporate talent management and training. The reason I say this is great news for Canvas SCORM users is once they build it for Bridge, they are much more likely to build it out in Canvas.

I had another college call and ask me about adding Rise content to Canvas just yesterday. I did some testing this morning and seems to all work for me, so not sure what issues others are having. Signed up for the Rise/360 trial (we own SL3) and used the Health and Welness sample to test with.
- I exported the RISE content for LMS, SCORM 1.2, set 'Track using Quiz Results' and selected the welness quiz, and set reporting for Passed/Failed (this really shouldn't matter since we are only interested in the percentage for points).
- Then I used use the SCORM LTI tool in Canvas to upload the .zip, set it as a graded assignment, and that was it.
--
- Also tested the content in the Canvas Student App and it launches the external LTI and passes the grade through fine.
- Further testing changing the default 100 points on the canvas assignment to something else and points calculate correclty based on percentage.
Mind you, this was a quick test in Canvas wit the Test Student and another course with a student profile, but all seemed to work well. And the dynamic responsive design is SOOOO much nicer than when we were using iframes and the scaling would kill things.

I just exported Rise to LMS Scorm 1.2 and imported it into Canvas. None of the images are displaying! What could be the reason for that?
Hi Marianne,
I’m sorry that you’re having some trouble here.
Did you try uploading your course to SCORM Cloud to see if you experience the same behavior?
That's what we generally recommend doing to determine whether the problem stems from the course or the LMS. Here's an article that walks you through how to do that.
If it works correctly on SCORM Cloud, then the problem is coming from the LMS and you'll need to talk to your provider.
If you see the same issue on SCORM Cloud, then the problem is likely coming from the course itself. If that's the case, please reach out to our support team.
In the meantime, if there's anything else I can do to help, please let me know!
