Quite an old thread, but I myself is looking into Branchtrack as creating shortsims takes 5xtimes longer in Storyline (unfortunately). Try taking a look at this post: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/building-better-courses/communication-between-storyline-and-3rd-party-content
