Everything we know about Cornerstone on Demand and Storyline!
I thought I would start a thread about Cornerstone on Demand so there's a central place for people to read and add to. There seems to be a dearth of information about how CSOD and Storyline interact with each other as well as the unresolved issues surrounding it. I've spent many hours scouring the web and speaking with Cornerstone trying to find a solution. Hopefully this thread will serve as a resource for others going forward.
On a side note, I love Articulate Storyline. I started with Adobe Captivate with limited success. It was a very steep learning curve, but I was able to get some basic functionality out of it. I tested out Storyline with it's 30 day trial, and I will say that time-to-effectiveness was drastically reduced. It really IS like using powerpoint. Granted there is less complex functionality and interactions available than Captivate, but so far it's given me everything I've needed to use. The benefit is that the learning curve is much less steep too. Think of it as the difference between iMovie and Final Cut Pro. The latter can do some crazy effects, but the former gives you 90% of what you need and can get you comfortable in 1/4 of the time.
It's nice to have a properly-working content creation tool when you're in an LMS like Cornerstone. I have enough trouble in CSOD as it is.
So some of the nuggets of wisdom that I've found are :
- Cornerstone does not track SCORM 1.2 content properly. You cannot pull a lot of the reports if they are not in SCORM 2004 format. You don't have the option to select that course in the reports.
- If you export into SCORM 2004, there will be an extra section on the left with text links to the module. This takes up 30% of the screen, and on smaller laptop screens may crowd out the module window. Cornerstone says this is a Storyline exporting settings issue. I couldn't find any settings that shows/hides that section. The workaround is to resize the module to the screen, which doesn't get rid of the section, but at least fits the module.
- When reporting, you can get the completion status for a course based on quiz result or last slide viewed. You can also get a final grade for course. Storyline passes the results information for each question (including short answer) but you cannot pull a list of the answers for an individual. Therefore, it may not be advisable to administer any testing where you'll need to review individual answers
- You can get a list of aggregate answers for a module. e.g. I can see how 100 employees answered this multiple choice question. This is helpful to determine if learners are absorbing the course information correctly.
- Web objects (such as websites, or links to sharepoint documents) work in modules if your IT has added csod.com to the trusted sites
- Popup windows that open up the articulate module in CSOD will work if you add csod.com to the allowed list for popup blockers. Your IT dept can also add this to everyone's computer. Otherwise when learners click the "launch" button, the module does not show up.
I'll post more as I think or find them, but feel free to add to this list!

I realize this is an old post but it popped up when I did a Google search trying to see if we can get to the .story file through the published zipped SCORM file uploaded into CSOD. Does anyone know if this is possible? If so, how can a CSOD administrator do this?
- MelanieSobie-14Community Member
The .story file is not contained within the published zip file.

Thank you Melanie!

Follow-up to my own question :)
Can we add the .story file into the SCORM, which then makes it available?

Following your question, is there a way to download a learning object zip file that was uploaded to CSOD? The impression I got from them is that it is impossible (?)
- MelanieSobie-14Community Member
It used to be impossible without opening up a ticket with GCS. They just implemented a new feature in this last release called "Download Online Course Publication Files From Course Console". If you enable this feature, you will be able to download the zip file.

Wow, great news. Where can I find it?

You have to put in a ticket to have a permission added. I think it is called "online course.download." Then once you have the permission, it will show up on the same page where you reversion or modify a course.

It will allow you to generate a download link like this:

Correction, the permission is titled “Online Class - Download Files."

Hi Nic,
These kind of completion issues are frustrating! Just as a troubleshooting step... do you know if the Storyline Player for this course has the Connectivity Alert Turned on?
Player > Other > Connectivity Alert > Prevent learners from progressing when offline.
If it is turned on, I'm thinking that might at least rule out that learners are losing internet connection. I think it is on by default in the Player, so this may be grasping at straws.

Thanks Will - I'll make sure this setting is switched on.

I agree with Will. You might also try to proxy in as a few of the folks who reported not getting completion to ensure that they've met all of the completion requirements. Depending on how the Storyline file is setup, it could be possible that folks skipped over something, preventing them from meeting the completion conditions.

Maybe you have already done this - but have you tested the course in the Rustici SCORM cloud? Have you re-exported? Have you backed up or moved ahead a Storyline software Version? Have you copied and pasted into a new project file? All the typical trouble shoot items - sorry to be Capt. Obvious. And as Will and Steve mentioned - learners are tricky they skip menu items in weird ways - so maybe they are simply skipping a page or two meaning a trigger isn't happening that triggers course results? OR maybe you have the course reporting one completion result but not another? I have noticed it is easy to turn off and on course reporting features both on the results pages, the Quiz menu AND the Tracking menu when exporting any one of those might have turned off or changed reporting for pre-check or final exam which does report to the LMS to a Knowledge check which does NOT.

I wanted to share a method I use to pull SCORM data into a PowerBI Report on the web. It refreshes daily. The goal is to make a SCORM report more easily understood by an internal client. I created a playlist on YouTube to illustrate how to set it up: Cornerstone SCORM Report to OneDrive to Power BI dashboard - YouTube

Has anyone else using Cornerstone had a Storyline course mark as complete if a Learner lets a course go idle - gets the pop up message saying click here in the next two minutes or the course will log out - upon hitting the pop up interaction button - the course closes and marks as complete. I can't duplicate it in SCORM Cloud and it involves leaving a course not ideal for Trouble shooting...I suspect it is a setting in the Cornerstone LMS - but not sure what to look for. The course is most certainly NOT complete and no score is being reported. - update - yes a score is being reported-a passing score but not the course score
