I keep it simple. when my storyline file opens, I get the date. It is the first thing the first slide does. This lets me display the date throughout the course. Here is the code I use.

var today = new Date();

var dd = today.getDate();

var mm = today.getMonth()+1; //January is 0!

var yyyy = today.getFullYear();

if(dd<10) {

dd='0'+dd

}

if(mm<10) {

mm='0'+mm

}

today = mm+'/'+dd+'/'+yyyy;

var player = GetPlayer();

player.SetVar("SystemDate",today);

The certificate java is at the end of the course. Keeping them separate makes it easier to trouble shoot.

My certificate java looks like this:
