Fonts in Feedback Master not applying

Can anyone help me better understand why I cannot seem to get the font I have specified in my feedback master to show when previewing my quiz question feedback?

I need to use Sofia Pro. I have several of the feedback master slides I use set up with Sofia Pro as the font. However, when I apply the layout to my actual feedback layers, "correct" and "incorrect", the font defaults to some sort of Open Sans or Lato font. It is frustrating, as the fonts appear fine in the Slide view mode. It seems to also be the case when published to review 360, the font still defaults to the incorrect one.

  • Feedback layers can at times be so buggy. One thing to be aware of is sometimes if you modify the feedback master you may need to reapply that look to the specific feedback layer. But as valentin6655 said, you may still need to reapply the text to every text box on the feedback layers themselves.

  • Thanks for the responses and tips! Unfortunately I still could not pinpoint the issue. I think that there were others things going on in the story file that I was not privy to as I had made a copy of a prior learning for a different subject. The sofia font was definitely available for use (downloaded and licensed) as it was appearing fine in the others parts of the module. I ended up moving forward with publishing as is and may never know the actual issue that was preventing the feedback slides from displaying the sofia font.

  • Hi JamesFord-fc16d!

Happy to jump in and help!

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with fonts applied from the Feedback Master, in Storyline. Valentin6655 is likely referring to the files Storyline stores in the Windows Temp Folder, as a temporary backup (cache) of your projects. These files can be used to restore your project to an earlier version in the event of file corruption or misplacement. They can be safely deleted from your machine as long as you have properly saved your project files to your local drive. However, I do not believe this is necessary for the issue you've shared.

Also, Storyline does not offer a setting to "include custom fonts" when publishing. The published output uses Web Fonts (WOFF files) so that text automatically appears exactly the way you designed it, and scales appropriately.

I downloaded the custom font (Sofia Pro) and tested this on my end. This font, applied from my Feedback Master, was retained at the Slide-level when publishing my project to Review 360.

I have some follow-up questions to help us troubleshoot this better:

    • Does this behavior occur with any custom font that's being used, or is it specific to 'Sofia Pro'?
    • Are you authoring, and publishing your .story file directly from your local hard drive? Working off of a network drive may introduce unexpected behavior.
    • Have you tried performing a repair of your Storyline installation to see if that corrects the issue?

If you're comfortable sharing a copy of the affected .story file, we'd be happy to take a closer look! Feel free to upload that here in the discussion or privately through a support case.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

      Hi Steven,

Thanks for the detailed response. I'm not sure that I am allowed to share the story file as the training contains some company-specific sensitive info. Maybe we have an NDA, not sure. However, happy to answer your questions:

      1. Is this behavior specific to 'Sofia Pro'?  A: it actually appears that it is, but only to the bold version, which was what I have been trying to use from the start! I tried using a couple other different fonts and, viola - it worked fine. I also decided to just use Sofia Pro Medium, as that font was retained at the Slide-level when publishing. This ended up being my "solution".
      2. Are you authoring, and publishing your .story file directly from your local hard drive? A:  yes
      3. Have you tried performing a repair of your Storyline installation?  A: No i have not.

I may try repairing the installation. The very strange parts of all this are that 1. Sofia Medium works fine while Sofia Pro Bold does not, and 2. Sofia Pro Bold does appear in the publish output for the rest of the slides where it is used. Thanks for the help!

        Hi JamesFord-fc16d!

        Thanks for following up!

The bold formatting not being retained on only one slide is indeed strange. What you've shared sounds similar to font playback behavior we see when Variable fonts are used. Not all Variable fonts are supported by Storyline 360. While these may appear to function when authoring within Storyline, they will not render properly once published.

Typically if this issue occurs, then the bold formatting would be absent on all Slides where that font style was used. Still, I would encourage you uninstall any Variable instance of Sofia Pro, and replace that font package with the Static version.

However, if you're still having trouble after that, and a repair of your Storyline installation doesn't help we would need to see a copy of your .story file for further testing. I understand privacy might be of concern, but our team is happy to sign an NDA as well.

Let me know how it goes!
