Heading levels not read by screen reader

Hello,

I am trying to achieve basic level of semantic formatting for heading levels (h1, h2, h3 etc.) and have followed steps which are provided as follows:

Upgrade Project Text
https://articulate.com/support/article/Storyline-360-Upgrade-Project-Text

Accessible Semantic Formatting
https://articulate.com/support/article/Storyline-360-Accessible-Semantic-Formatting

But for some reason NVDA doesn't read any heading levels also on element list it doesn't show any headings present.

Is there anything which I am missing? Attaching file for reference.

Tazeem.

  • Hello Tazeem!

Thank you for sharing your project! I've tested your course with NVDA and also noticed the heading level isn't read. However, if you create a new text box in the project and assign it a heading style, then it is read off.

I've made this change on your first slide and attached the updated project to this reply.

Thanx Lauren for replying. We have also observed this while testing it further at our end however the behaviour is a bit erratic, gives different results for similar type of textbox.

Another query is, I have an older version at 3.50 version on my other desktop where I started the project, then updated project text and added heading levels. Could this be a problem because of older version? Or is it like, if I start a new project from scratch on latest version of SL this issue wouldn't come?

    Tazeem,

    Thanx.

    • Hello Tazeem!

Thanks for those additional details! I do not see these issues when creating a project in our latest Storyline 360 (Build 3.58.26627.0). It could be an issue with an older version of Storyline 360. Have you tried importing the course in a new project using the latest version of Storyline 360?

Alt text should be keep as it is like 'greyed out'. If we edit or change the alt text is not focusing by pressing "H" shortcut key in NVDA screen reader. I attached few screen shots please check once. Is there any solution to fix this issue because sometimes we need to edit the alt text.

Hi Lauren thanx for the reply. I tried importing slides from older file to a new file but to no avail, it didn't work.

I will try making everything from scratch, hope it works.

    Hello,
I have two pieces of feedback from a native screen reader.

    1. It is confusing to have both the course title and the slide title announced as heading level 1. Is there a way to remove the H1 style from the course title?

    2. It is disorienting to have the top bar region read at the end of the DOM. When starting at the top (Control+Home), the reader reads the slide title first, then the contents of the slide, then the player controls at the bottom of the slide, followed by the left side bar, and ends at the top bar region. Is there a way to change the sequence?

    Thank you,

    Olga
