Hide base layer object on multiple layers at one time?

I have a slide with multiple layers.  I want to hide a certain base layer object on all of the layers.  The only way I can figure out how to do this is to edit the base layer objects on every layer ...

This is one of those things that really irritates me, if I copy a layer why does it lose the objects that I have hidden on the base layer?
