I need your brains, and I'm not a zombie!
Hi Sherri. Happy to loan my brain for non-zombie snack purposes!
The first thing that came to mind was instead of having numbers to click, that each term could be listed on the screen. That would give learners more context for what information they'd be exploring. And if you made each term into a button, it would be easy to use states to have them change color after being clicked. That way, learners could keep track of which ones they had or hadn't viewed yet.
That said, 19 definitions is a lot to take in at once. Is there any chance they could be clustered by themes and spread across several slides? So maybe a learner only reviews 5 on a slide, then has to do something with that knowledge, and then moves on to the next small set of definitions?
Related question: You mentioned being asked to rework the section. Was there specific feedback about why your reviewers wanted it reworked? That might help us all come up with some additional solutions that could work.
