Interactive Job Aid- is this idea possible?

I'm relatively new to the ID and e-learning world and am finding that my imagination is often exceeding my ability/the ability of the tools in general. I have an idea but am unsure if it's possible-

I would like learners to select 3 goals from a checklist and then a job aid to be generated for download. Is this possible via storyline? If so, how and where can I find the resources to guide me through it?

If it's impossible or too advanced, let me know

  • Paige,

This is possible in Storyline 360. An interactive checklist can be built to collect each learner's answer. From there, you can direct them to the appropriate job aid to download based on the learner's responses.  Of course, this is one approach but depending upon your specific situation, there are many other ways to address this as well.

I suspect if you provide more details, others will comment and provide more approaches.

    Thanks,

    Richard

  • An interactive checklist was my original intent...but it might be a lot to make job aids for the amount of choices I have (8 in total, so over 50+ possible combinations).

    Hi Paige,

Some of the fun of Storyline is discovering all the different ways you can make an idea come to life in it. While customizable checklists aren't the main thing Storyline 360 was designed to create, there are ways to use it for that purpose. Which approach you want to use will likely depend on your comfort with both Storyline 360 and coding.

The easiest option to build is the solution Richard mentioned: create a separate file for each version of the checklist (a PDF or Word file are both flexible options) and then have your Storyline file direct learners to the appropriate version based on their choices. It is a bit time-consuming to create each version of the checklist, but at least it's easy work once you have the design set. Plus, it gives you the most control over the look at feel of the list and it's an easy option to build if you're new to Storyline 360.

If you'd like to have Storyline 360 generate the checklist for you, that's possible too. It'll just be a bit more complex to build. On your goal selection screen you can use true/false variables to let Storyline keep track of what options learners selected. Then on a subsequent checklist screen you can use triggers that check those variables and display checklist items based on what learners selected. You might need to play with how you set up that screen, though, to create a layout that works for all your possible checklist items. Finally, you'd need to allow learners to print that checklist. Storyline 360 doesn't have a built-in print screen option, but some users have used JavaScript to enable that functionality.

Those are just the two initial options that came to mind, but other people in the community might have other techniques that could work for this idea as well.
