Is there a way to create custom alt text for Hyperlinks

Is there a way to create custom alt text for Hyperlinks. When I create a text hyperlink I am not able to add custom alt text. When I use NVDA all I hear is the "name of text and link" and for the visited state it just says "visited link". If have multiple links in one text box there is no way for the non-sighted learner using a screen reader to know which link they are on after visiting them since they just say "visited link".

I know the workaround is to use a transparent object to customize the normal and visited states with descriptive alt text, but that is very time consuming.

Is there a better way to do this.

  • Hello Russ,

Thanks for reaching out! Adding custom alt-text to text hyperlinks is currently not supported. I've informed our product team of your request, and we'll let you know if there are any changes that might help.

In the meantime, here's how we manage feature requests that we receive.

  • Hi RussAmundsen  screen readers generally offer keyboard shortcuts to list all links on a page. Using JAWS I can hit insert + F3 and then use the appropriate option to list links. I haven't experienced issues with links and a screen reader before (JAWS 2024 and 2025). As well as announcing visited, the text within the link is also announced for me. I don't remember an issue with NVDA but will try again today.

  • HI RussAmundsen this is my result using NVDA. My experience with JAWS was the same too. In this example, the text of the link is still being read, whilst announcing the link is visited.
