Issue with Block Library Behaviour

After creating a block, I save it in my Block Library with the intention of reusing it across multiple courses or lessons.

When I insert that block into another lesson and edit it within the lesson, the changes overwrite the original version stored in the Block Library.

This behaviour is problematic because the blocks in my Block Library are meant to serve as templates. They should be editable within individual lessons without affecting the original template in the library.

As a result, blocks I’ve used across multiple courses have changed unexpectedly, causing significant issues.

Expected Behaviour:
Editing a block within a lesson should not overwrite the template stored in the Block Library.

Suggested Improvement:
Perhaps introduce two types of Block Libraries:

  • Template Library – blocks remain unchanged when edited in lessons.
  • Global Library – blocks update universally across all courses when edited.

This would give authors the flexibility to choose whether a block acts as a fixed template or a global component.

Thank you.

I first noticed the odd behaviour last week:

    • I created a Custom Block (beta) and saved it in my Block Library > Block Templates.
    • I inserted it into a lesson but edited it - changing its title, background colour, font colour, and corner graphics, and then saved it under a new name within my Block Library > Block Templates.
    • I noticed that when I inserted this new block into any lesson/course, it looked like the original block I duplicated from instead of the revised version.
    • When I view my Block Library > Block Templates each of those said custom blocks are named differently as intended, and look different as intended, but when inserted into a lesson, they all look like the original version.

Additionally, this morning,  I inserted an older Custom block into a lesson saved in my Block Library > Block Templates, I edited its wording, and this change spread across every lesson where I used this block.

These issues are currently under investigation by Articulate under Case #01262123.

  • That is weird. I've never had a Block Template update based on how I edited an inserted block.

I just tried to replicate that behavior (in case there was a recent update to Rise), but the Block Template remained intact.

StevenBenassi: Can you or another staff member clarify this issue?

This is now a support ticket with Articulate - Carlo found the same issue following replication of what I described, which is under investigation.
