Issue with Play/Pause button on base layers

Make sure the “Allow seeking” option is set to “Yes” in the slide layer properties for each audio layer.
This is interesting. I found that selecting "Pause timeline of base layer" allowed me to pause the audio playback on a layer. I think this is more interesting as opposed to malfunctioning behavior; the number of situations where you'd need the base layer to continue while you were listening to audio on a slide aren't many, if any. Hope this helps!
Did you set that as a trigger? When I tried this it still did not pause the audiop, just reset it again.
