Thank you for your response to my request for help!
What I was able to do:- slightly compress the videos so as not to lose quality,
- and when exporting the .story file to a .zip SCORM package, I deselected the adaptive media quality setting during playback in order to have fixed quality.
In this way, I was able to get below the 262 MB limit.

You could try taking the published MP4 files (located in /story_content) and compressing these using a third party video tool. I can highly recommend the excellent open source HandBrake for this job which you can find here. Just make sure that the processed files have the same names as SL's output files!
